An analysis of Prems teams so far in 2008

Post by SAD GAL »

Seen a few matches this year (trials and charity match) and a pleasing theme is coming out of the games I have seen that will make season 2008 a close fought contest. well done to all the players.

Many teams have recruited well (coaches and players alike) and if all augurs well, a far more even comp will unfold as it has. My analysis as follows:

1) City - Good contest. Clean hard running skilful and always good value. Balanced team. Consistent 90 minute contest with brilliant passages of play and fantastic solo efforts backed up by the team. Will Lia manage a full season? Well done Eduardo for coaching in a positive manner.

2) Cumby - Excellent players and mix of youth and experience. My only concern is that they rely on early goals that come from fast paced attacks. Once the game progresses to 2nd half the fast paced attack falls away drastically. Chris needs plan B and C to progress. And please stop the midfield flood Chris. It spoils the game. Your players are capable of better. And stop the continual whining about decisions on the field. Focus on the game gals.

3) Metro: Enzo has added some spark to an already hard working unit. Can the older gals deliver what he needs to become leaders and eventually win the league title? Will they be like their men’s counterparts? There is a lot of emphasis on hard physical stuff and a couple of quick players heading to goal however, those players need to understand its not a 100 m dash. They need to be able to twits turn and lay the ball off.

4) Fulham: A team that has significant turnover in the off season. New coach. Some new players and some existing players that need to step up and set an example. The game plan always seems to kick to MJ and she will put away (as she usually does) the goals. If she gets marked heavily she will not appreciate the attention and will struggle. Big heart MJ. There are other hard working players who’s commitment is great. Skills lets them down. Number 12 needs to be a team player and pass the ball much earlier. She will be far more damaging. Max’s team will peak at the right time.

5) Olympic: Promised so much and with the team of 2 years ago, should have featured in finals and been closer to the top of the league ladder. John is a gutsy dude and has the faith of the players. They respect him and deliver the game he wants. They’re a tall group that if the exploit their height advantage will win a lot more games. The Roo and Bexis are tried and trusted players however they cannot do it alone. Need support from everyone there to make every base a winner.

6) STURT: Persistent. Confident. Team based. and Determined. these are the words I use to describe Sturt. with their coaching staff (one of only few females in the coaching caper at Prems level) and support crew, they can only get better. he question is? Why haven’t they as with Metro and Olympic, made a far more significant impact in the league and Cup? Do they lack stability or confidence? They can play and take on the biggies but what is stopping them from achieving success? They do give a hard fought contest but they are capable of much more.

The rest? Improving and here’s hoping their enthusiasm is quickly rewarded with results. We want to see them prosper in Prems.

Your thoughts?

A very good read but........it does show IMO how far the Prems is viewed by most people, 6 named teams and then the others.
I feel to be fair this article should include ALL teams as individuals, not a them and us attitude (even if it wasnt meant that way), but for those named a good and interesting read.

Not at all Deyy

You don't agree with my appriasal of the teams thus far?

I cannot fairly comment on the other teams because they are relaitvely new to the comp aand I may (incorrectly) still reflect on season 2007 which will make for an unfair assessment.

Well contrary to your opinion Mad Gal there are 9 teams in the premier league, and as such all 9 should be analysed.

I went into this topic thinking I would get an analysis of all the teams, and was quite disappointed to only find 2/3 of them there. Well done Sad Gal, however, we would like an analysis of the other 3 teams please. Can someone please oblige?

True deigo, Its only fair if u analyse all the teams not only some.

as for the rest..

this is on my opinion and please correct me if im wrong..

Para hills - Rather young team, Great spirit and always up for a good contest, saw them play in pre-season and from losing 2-1 at half time they managed to win 4-3, They fight till the very end and never give up.Defence and midfield are quite strong need a bit of work on the strikers as the midfielders were the ones scoring, dont get me wrong this could be tacktics? Not to far down the ladder still anything can happen with this bunch of girls.

Campbelltown City- A fairly physical team who strive to be on top during the game,i think control and team work lets them down a little bit hence there style is to "boot" the ball away without any control. I think there home grounds also let them down a little bit because as they do train and play on these pitches you come to adjust to the surroundings which in this case is a fairly sloped and uneven field. They have a few stand out players which do fill the gaps in this team and i belive this team does put up a great game to watch.

Western Districts- First season in Premierleague, Congratulations!! They Seem to be struggling to get into the competition but dont speak to soon they still have another year to give us a run for our money. This team is made up of potential but i belive has not yet found the "gel" which brings the team together,They have a quite stable defence and thier midfield seems to have things covered. A few quick players up front but they do lack in physical competition.Good sportsmanship will always be a thing in this club which makes the games more fun aswell as competitive. They have outstanding "plays" aka corners, free kicks and throw ins which usually result in a goal opportunity.

anything to add??

Western Districts - I quite agree with you analysis of the team, although they have not yet "gelled" together (which comes from experience playing together), they do have the potential to shake up the competition in the next few seasons. I was also impressed with their sportsmanship, they seem to want to play well, but also have fun and enjoy the game, which is something that quite a few of the other "big" clubs lack. I can see them causing a few upsets later on in the season, definitely keep them on the radar......

Campbelltown - This team does seem to rely on a few key players, however they have a couple of quick girls up front who can do quite a bit of damage if they slip past the defense, with long balls seeming to be their preference. The keeper is quite good, however I think that they need to strengthen their defense. That being said, I think a few of the other clubs underestimate this team, and this could work in their favour.

Para Hills - Agree that this team is made up of younger girls, however they seem to be coping quite well in the league so far. This team has a fighting spirit, which they have maintained throughout their time in the competition. Defence and midfield are very solid, strikers don't seem to be scoring as much as the midfielders, however, i think they are wearing down the oppositions' defence throughout the game, thereby opening up the chances for the midfielders to come through and capitalise. Definitely a team to watch this season.

Kronaldo Girl - thanks for your analysis of the other teams much appreciated :)

There's no need for that type of language, but I do agree about the gist of your comment choochoo. Seems that Mad Girl is in a world of her own, where only the "big" clubs matter.

You're gonna be in for a rude shock when you come up against some of the teams you've underestimated.......

Mt two bob wiorth.

Cumby plays the game the coach wants. Try and score goals early and exploit their pace!

THEN THEY FLOOD AND SQUASH THE GAME. A bit like Sydney in the AFL. Ugly football.

Interestingly enough, I quite agree with Shorty here. This is also viewed by people who do not play, but have an interest in the league. If you don't like the topic, just don't read it.......
