It's important that the integrity of the teams and the competition is sound. Coaches should never be in a position where there is a potential conflict of interest. Even if a coach has the highest integrity in the selection process someone will question it if there is some personal connection involved. Not only does the selection process need to be fair it has to be SEEN to be fair. That can only happen if the coach has no personal interest. Zone coaches should not be able to coach the same age group as their relatives or their own club. Only then can he be SEEN to be totally impartial. This should be mandated by the FFSA.

Surprised not to see Brian Powell on the list. He is at Enfield this year and is again doing a great job developing the young players.

A bit surprised to see one name there. He was banned a few years ago due to the singing of an inappropriate song at the SAJSA State Champs. Pretty sure it was a life ban. He argued like crazy and never really accepted the ruling. Disapointing really as the song was pretty crude and not good in front of a lot of young kids. Disapointing that FFSA don't uphold legally made decisions by the SAJSA.

:?: Brian Powell has done a great job over the years..probably a bit long in the tooth now though. Great guy none the less. Thought all of last years winning coaches would have got a guernsey this year. Maybe they didn't all nominate. Under 15's Northern coach had a great year with both club and zone...maybe given it away.

You might be referring to Richard (not Bill) Preston, Western U14 coach? He only used to coach Cumberland (Premier Team) and currently involved at some level with Western Districts or Strikers. The team are very privileged to have his wealth of experience

what age group was this? I had one of the girls west zone teams last year and had huge problems geting girls to come out to trials - reason quote to me was "last years coach' ( ie a coach from 2 years ago) - but no-one went into too many details..

SAJSC A Coach's Perspective

Post by Drusetta »

Hi All

Thought I'd put my comments in as a (current) coach at the SAJSC for the 5th time. No prizes for quessing my identity...

I do not have a child playing but that doesn't mean a parent who coaches their child gives them an unfair advantage. Sometimes it's the opposite. It's up to each indivdual and how objective they can be regarding their own child/ren. I have seen both extremes.

Coaching Appointments: As far as I know each club with a full complement of teams finds it difficult to appoint a quality coach for every team. Sometimes clubs make do; just so the team can play in the league. As evidenced by this years girls appointments, it was difficult to find enough coaches. A pity - it has the potential to be a great young football talent identifier - which is why I coach. (My million dollar contract must have got lost in the mail...again).

Zone Selection: Again it's up to the individual coach. Each time I have coached I try and get out to see the players in action with their own club. Each year I have coached in the SAJSC I have invited 5-10 players to trial in addition to whom the club had nominated. To my knowledge, the FFSA supports this. The rules of nominating up to 7 per club is an FFSA policy to apply to all - I mean there has to be some rule? In the past some clubs have sent every player to me, other times - sent none, and in some years sent the required quota even though some players were clearly not developed sufficiently at that point to be nominated in the first place. For selection purposes my loyalty is to the game.

Purpose: The purpose is about talent identification. no coach (school, club, zone, state, national or international) will please everybody.

Final Selection: Although I disagree with the limit of 6 players per club in the final team, I stick by the rules. Each club has the opportunity at any time to contact the State Coach and invite them out to view potential or new talent.

Poaching: Although I've never done this myself, I don't have aproblem with it. Ultimately it is the decision of the parent and the player. If they leave a club for greener pastures, chances are they weren't totally happy where they were. Sometimes they do get sucked in. But they learn. As long as the players are happy and are learning does it really matter who they play for?

Corona & fayigatsidoi: If we all try and make a positive contribution to the "real world" we can effect change. It may be a difficult and slow process but I believe the rewards of seeing young talent "make it" are worth it. Even if those changes are only in our own little town.
I was asked to coach the U14's East this year by parents from 4 different clubs. I applied but I was assigned the U11's. So I'll make do.
I do empathise with your experiences. Bill Shankly is right - there are some quality coaches amonsgt the SAJSC group this year so I'm looking forward to seeing the talent on show.

Cheers

Well said - I hope we are all coaching to help develop the players and their game, and not for selfish reasons.

Long time no see Mr Drusetta, we worked together for a brief time a few years ago, welcome to the Forum ...

Your points are all valid and it is good to see that the game is in good hands.

I coach my son and I must say I find it very hard to treat him like the other players, I am always harder on him , but hopefully that will help him develop.

With quality coaches like yourself and others around the game is in good hands.

:? Confused :? Confused! I know and have seen a little mid-fielder from a game I watched (Campbelltown City Vs Adeleaide City) He tore City apart. The lad plays well and could be the best potential player in his level, then why was he dropped from Zone? SAD! SAD! SAD!

P.S
Corona you are absolutely CORRECT!

Ninja111, have you seen all the players that are in the zone team play ?

There will always be contentious issues around selection , there is no real way of measuring player a versus player b in a truly objective sense.

Unlike other sports like swimming and athletics, where he or she that swims or runs the fastest is picked.

So you learn to live with it , you try the best you can and you take opportunities when they arise and do the best you can....

ps I have not seen a JPL game in my life so I have no axe to grind one way or the other....

drusetta if clubs had more coaches like you say you are .

it has come to my attention from 2 clubs that 2 players where selected for zone when these clubs did not give there names to the zone coaching , one happens to be the son of the coach in question and he happened to also miss the final 22 selection trial , its true what ninja 111 said as there are several players that dont make it in the trials , not because there not good enough but rather who you know , shame shame shame . i hear so much bull dust on selection . i just hope that these teams are successful to justify there selection . its dissapointing to hear these things and it looks bad for zone , not saying all coaches do this , but you can only cover up for a player thats not the grade for only so long as you are involved . wake up . i feel sorry for these players that dont make it for one no money or two havent got the contact , soccer can only improve if a player is picked on merit . once again this is not happening everywhere but its happening.

Zone Player Selection

Post by Drusetta »

Ninja 111 & Corona

Unfortunately the subjective favourtism exists...everywhere in life. We can only influence what we can control. Yes, it still continues; even at state and national level. With any elite team selection one coach will not choose the exact same squad as the next. We all see slightly different things. Our formations and ideas of team may be different which would result in selecting more or less defenders, midfielders or forwards. Coaches can only go by what the players show during trials.

I don't know if you know but coaches were given 3 weeks to select a final squad from start to finish. This is not alot of time when competing for time against clubs, school sports, extra cirricular activities. The FFSA by its own admission commenced this selection process late

I only have admiration for all of the players that have virtually given up their entire weekend to the sport to fulfil all of their commitments. In my case it was Sat morning = school sport, Sat afternoon = Zone trials, Sun morning = club match, Sun afternoon = Zone trials.

As for the Campbelltown midfielder who was cut. If so then I can only say that the coach (which I realise could be me) didn't see him at his best over the trial period. Class will out - if he has the talent, he will be spotted at some stage. A few years ago in this tournament, what I thought was my best performing player was not selected for state trials because he was too short. 2 years later, he had grown - he gets selected and is now part of the state team. Go figure.

Corona - if the coach and son are who I think they are, then the situation was this: 4 players from the club were nominated. The coach(s) were advised to select any more players they thought might suit their team. As One more player was chosen by the other coach (not the coach's son). I was told he trialled very well and that he did make the final 22 but was injured from trialling for 1 or 2 sessions.

Most coaches, including myself will be picking on merit. I know some of the coaches in the SAJSC this year and they are good coaches who would only select objectively. As mentioned in prior posting, quality coaches for every team in every sport is impossible. Yes, it is a shame.
For the Game. For the World.

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME

Post by ninja111 »

Dear Zito,
Sometimes caught in the middle of disputes between coaches, players and parents that take control of their egos. It is interesting and often saddening to note that many of these disputes result not from competition, but from uncontrolled egos. Modesty is often an important quality that so many are lacking. Someone in control of their ego will also have no difficulty accepting advice or recognising achievements of others and congratulating them.
As I mentioned, modesty is the key function of a successful club and team, most importantly it removes barriers to sharing, learning and growth.,

Thankyou Zito for your outburst SHAME ON YOU…..

ninja 111 are you a player? and why would you have a go at zito when he was not the one that started the dispute and it was not with the coach.
ninja 111, you say that people have control their egos!!!!!
i was at that game as a on looker. I sew it all. Why did campbelltowns team manger tell a 12 year old kid to go into a carpark to fight!!!!
I think you have the wrong person on a ego trip.
zito did not start that dispute.
Also that lines man that day for campbelltown should not pick up the flag again. i am not with any club, but that was cheating at his best.
SHAME ON YOU NINJA 111 GET YOUR FACTS WRIGHT.
It should be a good game on sunday. I am going to get up for it.

club the boy is 14 and the team manager of campbelltown tried to settle things down until a few parents had a few words and then it started , between these teams there is a hate that will continue , its a shame as both teams play good soccer, this weekends cup final will be on and may the best team on the field win. i really think the parents are more of the problem as the players are only young men who try the best , which may not be good enough for there parents as seen from the adel city parent of that striker that also plays u13. and thats a shame as this puts on so much pressure on the lad .

FABRICATED

Post by ninja111 »

IT'S CONFUSING!!!!! I know club especially for someone that needs a lesson in spelling and grammer.
HONOUR; and how does it govern our behaviour?
For example, to be violent towards someone because they had brought shame to a team by a win (Campbelltown City Vs Adelaide City) That's shameful. Honour rests on whether your behaviour is considered worthy of respect, rather than whether your avenge and fabricated insults towards a team manager just because you lose a game.
I'm sorry club but fabricated men do not honour me, and as for the Campbelltown team manager all he was trying to do was break it up.
SHAME ON YOU CLUB FOR BEING A FABRICATED PERSON!

what if the lad is actually good enough? think back to the WC and croatia, i thought Niko Kranjkar was a good player in the cup.all his dad did was back his judgement and i thought it worked alright, until he got the sack after the WC that is!

NINJA111
YOU CAN PICK ON MY SPELLING.
BUT I THINK YOU HAVE IT WRONG NINJA111!!
The team manager did not try to break it up. his comment was what started it.
and you say your club? I am not with a club!!!!!!
also you say that I lost the game. This is not ture. I did lose no game Adelide city lost, in a good game.
You must not no zito very well!!!
there is no fabrication here!!!!
I was standing nere CAMPBELLTOWN MANGER when he made a comment that zito reacted to.
"For example, to be violent towards someone because they had brought shame to a team by a win " you wrote this in you post
you are talking about an under 14 team. if you are a player. good luck but IF NOT no team bring shame on an other because of a win. Shame on you for saying this!!!!! you are talking about a kids game!!!!! DON'T FORGET THAT.

mate I am not having a go but I just can't stand when people have a go at a choach that dose a good job. All coaches what to win but I think that same of the parents are just out of controll!!!

I CAN NOT BE WITH A CLUB BECAUSE I HOLD A WHISTLE. GET IT!!!!

sorry about the grammer.

Accepted versions of "TRUTH " are rarely the result of FACTUAL INFORMATION. They are formed by a simple repetition, tell people something often enough and they will believe it. THUS thats what happened after the game from ZITO!!!!! "AGAIN MR CLUB WRONG< WRONG < WRONG
