Barcelona and France defender Lilian Thuram is being linked with a move to Arsenal, as Arsene Wenger looks to shore up his defensive line this summer...

The verdict has been in for some weeks if not months now, that the Gunners need more strength-in-depth at the back, and with French veteran Lilian Thuram thought to be one of many leaving Barcelona this summer, Wenger may see this as an opportunity to gain experience and reliability in his backline.

El Sport contends that the 36-year-old may receive a one-year contract from the infamously 30s-phobic Wenger, despite the fact the former Juventus and Parma defender has been considering retirement.

It was Wenger who gave Thuram his first playing opportunity in 1991, when the Professor was in charge of Monaco and Thuram was just 17 years of age. He has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best and most celebrated defenders of his generation, but with his career almost at an end, even as a free transfer, it may not prove a worthwhile investment on Arsenal's part.

Thuram almost signed for Man Utd about 6 years ago and has always wanted to play in England - although he was thinking about retiring after Euro 2008 is still very fit so wouldn't be suprised if he goes and does well
