English F.A. Cup - Portsmouth v Cardiff City

Post by Missing Post Count »

General
Seven second tier teams have won the FA Cup – Notts County (1894), Wolves (1908), Barnsley (1912), WBA (1931), Sunderland (1973), Southampton (1976) and West Ham (1980).

The match
The last five meetings between the two sides have all been League cup games – Cardiff have won two, Portsmouth two and the other meeting was a draw.

The two sides have never met in the FA Cup before.

If Portsmouth lose then it will be the first time since West Ham beat Arsenal 1-0 in 1980 that a team outside the top flight has won the FA Cup.

This will be the first time that a final will be contested without Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham or Everton since 1975

All five of Pompey’s FA Cup wins this season have been by a one-goal margin.

Neither side has conceded a goal in their last three FA Cup matches.

Both teams won one game at home, three away and one on neutral territory in their respective runs to the final.

Peter Whittingham has scored three goals and logged two assists for the Bluebirds’ 10 goals en route to Wembley.

The first goal could be crucial as the losing finalist has failed to score in 12 of the last 14 FA Cup finals.

The FA Cup winning coach will be the first Englishman to lift the trophy since Joe Royle in 1995.

Cardiff have only won the trophy once – in 1927 when they beat Arsenal 1-0, famously the only time the trophy has been won by a non-English club.

Portsmouth have won it once – in 1939 when they defeated Wolves 4-1, famously they retained the trophy until 1946 because of the Second World War.

Two of the last three finals have been decided on penalties and then last three have gone to extra time.

Portsmouth have won only one of their six games since reaching the final, and have lost their last four matches in succession.

The south coast side have gone 336 minutes without a goal.

Cardiff have either scored or conceded (or both) three goals in each of their last five games.

Joe Ledley has scored four goals in his last six appearances (including the winner in the semi-final against Barnsley).

The last two non top-flight teams to reach the final have failed to score (Sunderland 1992, Millwall 2004).

It deserved a couple more goals.
Pity Ramsey didn't slot away his chance as that would have made a good story !
The playing surface seemed a bit slippery.

Shame a scabby goal from a keeper error decided it.

Fair play to Pompey though, better side on the night.
