Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
What do we think of these clubs that play A-Grade players in the reserve cup, so they have a chance to win some silverware.

Don't players who have played x amount of games in the A team become ineligible for the reserve cup? I know that's the case in Perth.

Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
When Adelaide Eagles (80's) won 3 reserve cups in a row, they were accused of same thing. They were div 4, 3 and 2 from memory in consecutive years during an era when the first team climbed through the divisions rapidly (went from div 7 to div 1 without missing promotion). The thing is that the first team got drawn against top opposition and were knocked out first round. The games in question often had first team players either suspended, injured or unavailable. So, come second round, given they were eligible, they would play reserves. Was usually only 2 or 3. Ended up winning 3 on the trot yet everyone accused them of playing their "whole" first team, which simply wasn't true.

I admit during the 80's I was off my tree a bit, but I still remember some things quite clearly!Bodø Glimt wrote:Come off it Bomber, you're as dodgy as they come

Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
What defines an "A-Grade" player?? as far as im concerned the cup is completely different to the league...... if a player has played an "A-Grade" Cup game then he is an A-Grade Cup player.... if he hasn't he is a B or C team player.
HA'WAY THE LADS
Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
Players who for the last 5 league games have played A-Grade are your A-Grade, SO SIMPLE, IS IT NOT?
Those that are on your RESERVE team sheets for the past 5 games are your reseves, these boys should be playing in the RESERVE CUP!

Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
happens all the time. A grade player injured/unavailable cup round, a grade get knocked out, so they play the B grade cup if they are still in. Nothing new or illegal with this, deal with it. I know it happened at Maco's when I was there...... club man.....
Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
Nothing for me to deal with mate, the question was clubs that use the majoriyy of the A-Grade in the reserve cup, not one or two players.

Which club actually did that then.......? I've never seen or heard of it before (the majority as you say....)club man wrote:Nothing for me to deal with mate, the question was clubs that use the majoriyy of the A-Grade in the reserve cup, not one or two players.
Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
I seem to remember seeeing something about elegible players in later rounds of the cup. Isn't there a minimum games requirement in that team in league games rule that comes into effect?
Or am i just imagining things?

Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
At the end of the day who cares.
I know at my club we were missing 4 A team players in the first round so 4 B team players had to step up. Now this round those 4 B team players cannot play in the B team even though they are B team players every other week.
If a club really wants to switch its squads around to win the Reserve Cup no-one can stop them, but I think you'd find almost all clubs and the players concerned would not want to do that anyway.

Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
Hey club man seeing as i have some say in what goes on at your club ill answer your question....if i had regular first team players who were not cup tied i would make them available to the reserves coach and if he chose to play them then it would be up to him...i wouldnt have any issues with it at all...having said that if i was the reserves coach i would think about what i would say to those guys who are regular reserves players and would not otherwise get a chance to play A's in any competition and then be asked to sit out the cup games????

Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
not always true. if for various reasons the "A-Team" is short of a few regular starters for a few weeks running for various reason (injuries, other commitments etc) then maybe someone who usually plays B's has been in the A-Team for 5 weeks in a row (possibly playing half a game for both A's and B's)club man wrote:Players who for the last 5 league games have played A-Grade are your A-Grade, SO SIMPLE, IS IT NOT?

Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
I think the key thing here is intent. If a regular A player is injured, suspended etc during a cup game I can't see a problem with them coming on board for the B's in the next round if the B's go through to the next round and the A's do not. What I don't think would be acceptable would be to purposely 'stack' the B's team with regular A players and concede the A grade cup campaign in order to have a crack at the B's.

Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
the thing is there should be 2 cups
sun div1 and 2 and sat div 1 play in 1 cup competition
the rest in a 2nd cup
then lower teams would have a reasonable chance of winning something in their A grade
which would deter them from stacking their B grade
it would also get rid of stupid fixtures that are obviously going to be 10+ goal margins, those games do no-one any good

they used to run a consolation cup, similiar to your thoughts
things happen for a reason
Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
What does it matter?? If a club can win silverware, go for it! PLayers will start whinging about why they're not getting games in their own team and then the club will have to deal with that!
A similar thing happened last year to what has been mentioned. We signed two new "A" players to the club after the A team had already been knocked out of Cup. One of them ended up playing for the B team in the Cup (but they lost anyway) and a regular B team player lost his spot. That player used that demotion as a spur and ended up being best on ground in ALL of the last five games and pinched the B grade Best and Fairest award.

Re: Clubs that play A-Grade in RESERVE CUP
I've played and won the last two Reserve Cup Finals. In those two years we only had one regular first teamer play for us in one season.
We played against a couple of teams that had 4-6 first teamers in there but we still beat them so it can be done. I don't think a lot of clubs would do it cause most clubs want to win the First Team Cup, not the Ressies.
