Yes. Geoff won the Player Of The Year that year.
Probably the best Downs team I have played in, I always thought of myself back then
as the weak leak, but in hindsight, I don't think we had a weak link !
We finished 4th. but should have finished higher.

I don't know how you can judge from the photo but I can assure you Dave McCombie was quite fit back then.
A solid central defender you didn't want to have challenging you for the ball !

Bernies oldest son was Michael (or Micky) who played Downs first team for a while.
Bernie, Sue, Michael and Robbie still turn up to most Downs games I think

I think Roy Ainscough coached Geoff as a Junior at Elizabeth City and lured him to the Downs for the 1978 season.
Geoff then played for the Vale for quite a while and went on to Coach the Vale to a run of Championships
until he passed away quite a few years back !
At one stage there was a Geoff Armstrong Cup played at the start of the season between Downs, Vale, City (Playford) and another team he played for that escapes me at the present.
Geoff was a very skillful player and truly great person to have known.

Was his passing due to a road accident? He probably wasnt that old probably late 40s or early 50's?

I do sometimes wonder, who from my past experiences may not be with us anymore :(

There wasn't a 6'5 defender good enough (that I knew) !
