Good on ya Salisbury Council

Our club grounds man has spoken to the Salisbury Council and they have decided to grind all the Net Pins on the posts off due to the potential threat they have with children climbing the posts and cutting there fingers on them….

We will need to use velcro strips to hold our nets to teh posts and cross bar instead of looping round the pins.... so if someone falls off a chair or a ladder while tying the net with these velcro scrips to the cross bar and seriously hurts themselve, what OH&S issue do we have then.... These things are supposed to hold the net enough so there is no gaps for the ball to go through....What a joke!!… has the council gone too far???

Has anyone else herd this? We got this straight from Pat the Cheif groundsman for the Salisbury Council in the last few days.

Well that has been told to clubs a couple years back that the become an issue with keepers diving for balls and players running into them.

It maybe a one in a million issue that someone gets caught on one but if you cant stand on a ladder and hook up a net there must be something wrong.

Our club uses velcro ties and they do the job just fine. Not a big deal, get over it.

My suggestion is to find an old beat up holden ute and unscrew the plastic hooks used to hold the ute liner down they work fine and are relatively safer than metal hooks. The trick is to find a beat up ute there might be a few around the downs area.

We had a player who was jumping up and down to pull down the net off the hooks a couple of years back. His wedding ring got caught on one of the hooks and it stripped his finger bare - like peeling a banana. He landed with no skin on his finger at all, just the bones and tendons, went to hospital and had to have it cut off........

so it does happen....

As for the tape, forget it, after the games the players take the tape off and leave it on the pitch, Seriors AND Juniors.
Cable ties are good for a "one off use" and practically impossible to get off again unless you have a pair of scissors or cable cutters handy; and again they too end up either attached to the net or on the floor.


My calculation is that by 2010 most clubs will have enough pvc to recycle into synthetic grass

Three things in common No1 hooks......No2 fingers.... No3 wedding rings.
Its alot cheaper and less painfull to get rid of the hooks. There are loads of ways to tie nets so whats the problem?

Cable ties have a little lever inside which acts as the locking mechanism. Lift that with scissors or a knife and use them again the following week.

That would be asking for trouble.

A ref would have to make a call as to which part of the post it hit and whether the ball is still in play or it's goal kick or corner etc..

we used the velcro strips at brahma last season when the council removed the hooks.
they worked quite well and nobody was injured whilst putting up or removing the nets.
is the way of the future .
