GLEESON EASTERN CHAMPIONS

Post by GFC13 »

With the final games played last night at Marden, there were 3 teams all able to take out the comp depending on results!

Pumas 3 - 2 Rosstrevor
*not to sure of the scorers

Gleeson 4 - 0 Blue Eagles
McDermott 3
Perotti 1

This result gave gleeson the cup to see them secure there first bit of silverware!

Great effort boys!!!!!

The boys played extremely well last night. We knew we had to win by 3 to take the cup and managed to do it in style :D .
Picked up another couple of good players over the last week, with helped, but I think with breza and pete leading the midfield this year should be a pretty good year.

Aldo any word on who won best player and leading goal scorer. Pete Mac must be pretty close for both

Congratulations. Great result lads. Big peter and little danny! Top work. Best of luck for the forthcoming season boys. I have a feeling it will be a good one, with scuba flying helicopters more often than the past 2 seasons! Go Gleeson!

Scuba cant guarantee that the helicopter will be out this year but if we get any other silverware, I’ll put my word on the fact, he will come out

Well done fellas BUT i find the concept of this championship weird. A league of 6 teams but you only play 3 games.

I realise that the weather affected the full tournament but it's not equitable to even have a finals series after only 3 games but a league of 6.

That aside, well done Huggy and Gleeson.
Things I am owed because they're too tight to pay up:

Colossus: One House

Costa: One Lunch

Oh and add in

Yeah the heat did affect things! But overall there were 3 teams that were able to finsh top and the team with the better goal differance after friday nights games won the comp! I belive Gleeson would of still gone all the way if the full comp went ahead!

Did Gleeson play Iggies or Pumas in the comp and if so what were the scores?

Unfortunately, it is not feasible to play the tournament over six weeks (5 round robin games plus finals). Therefore, unless we have eight teams and split into two groups of four as we have done in the past, it is never going to be 'equitable' - my idea is to always have eight but it doesn't work out that way. Also, ground availability affects the ability for some clubs to host games.

The Eastern Suburbs Challenge is ultimately designed to give clubs trial games, with at least the added incentive of playing for some silverware.

Scuba, there won't be any award for Best Player or Top Scorer this year - for this to work, clubs need to get scorers and best players to me after each game, but that did not happen this year from all clubs.

Not knocking your hard work and organisation Aldo. Thanks for doing it.

Why not 5 weeks with no finals though. No finals seems to work in all major football tournaments round the world.

Personally, I like the idea of a Finals Day - all the clubs playing in one location on the one day was where the competition started. That said, I am always open for ideas for the future of the competition.

Not to mention the takings over the bar either eh!!

You could still do the final round of matches there. The finals format worked very well the first year I played in it, when there was 2 groups of 4.

We did play the finals at Newton one year, but Marden is the logical choice to have the finals in terms of facilities (changerooms, grounds, etc).

Does that mean there is an actual trophy of some sort?

I guess the newly required silverware is proof that Sandy was just holding you boys back.

Yes, there is a shield which used to 'live' at Euro Cakes & Gelati on Glynburn Rd (as they were sponsors of the tournament). One of the old owners has the shield now, and will speak to my contact at Gleeson soon.

Thats a very interestin result and I can't believe that Gleeson are talking themselves up after beating a VERY average div 3 side, and also having lost to Vista (average div 2 side)? I have heard they are pretty poo?

He started but the defender made a comment about how he must work out and handed him a mirror. Sandy was last seen by the corner flag marvelling at his own reflection.
