Or is that possibility too simple for everyone to understand !
Plus it's great for the younger lads at the Downs to have experienced players around as a good percentage of them have come through the Downs junior ranks !

hey nugget i just want to clear this up for you, im not at the downs for money im at the downs coz i needed a change and many other reasons and yes money was a reason but not a major one. ive been out training for 3 weeks now and im loving it. motts, steedy all the lads and everyone else ive meet have made me feel really welcome so thanks to all of them. its looking like its going to be another good year for the club. so nugget get over the money coz i no for a fact u flash alot of money around at the gardens. this is no disrespect to you nugget but im getting sick of you going on about money. good luck for the season and looking forward to beating you during the season.

Just sticking up for Nugget, I am leaving Gardens to play at TTG next season all being well and Im not saying Im worth money or anything but Nelly didnt use that angle for me to stay at the club and as far as I was aware at my time there we were all on the same $$$. Or at least thats what they told me!!! DOH!

Firstly nuggett, I think you'll find Downs Lad probably has changed his forum name since he first joined as most of his earlier posts had a Gardens feel to them.

Secondly, on why would anyone travel 20 mins.....
I played with the Downs Seniors from 1974 - 1993 (juniors from 1968 - 1974).
From 1974 - 1980 I lived in the Downs. From 1981 - 1993 I lived at various locations including Enfield, Evanston, Hindmarsh, Mile End, Darlington,
Marion, Colonel Light Gardens, Mt Barker (often by bus) and Happy Valley.
For most of that time I trained two nights a week.
On the way I would drive passed Clubs like Gardens, Inter, Fulham, Findon (Macedonia) West Beach etc were all much closer and many paid incentives !
All that time all I ever seemed to hear were players getting money (or favours ) from clubs like Inter, Gardens, Vale etc etc.
resulting in the Downs losing many players in the late 70's. The most I ever recall receiving at the Downs was ~$10 beer money.
Why stay with a club that took me an hour to drive to ? Because of the lads and supporters at the Club.
I played 2 years down south with Noarlunga Lions but there wasn't the same friendly atmosphere there.
Over the last 15 years the Downs have focussed on creating a "family atmosphere" and they are now reaping the rewards.
With a strong Junior Club, attracting players with NSL experience like Brooks to the Senior side can only provide incentive for those juniors to aspire to play for the club.
There are now many 2nd generation Downs players contributing to the Club's current successes and I can't see that trend stopping to soon.
It's a great Club and I could easily understand why players feel welcome when they get there.

great post. thats why we do what we do. i had the same feelings for a federation club. i played and coached there for twenty two years.
from under 13s to the senior side. but, sadly i don't think those feelings can be found at federation clubs anymore. the passion for a club seems far greater these days at amateur clubs. i watched modbury v port lion last friday night. it was like a graveyard.

There are club people like you swannsong who will play for the love of the club..... but dont try to tell me Brooks & Aldrige are there for that.

Benny you came to me 3 weeks ago & said Motts had been on the phone offering you Alot more money to come to the Downs. You told me money was important to you because your building A new house you said there were other reasons but money was the main reason! So don't bullsh*t about the reason you left our club!

The GARDENS have looked after you for the last few years Ben gone out of our way many times & all you have to say is your sick of hearing about me go on about money at the Downs !

Yep, you coached me in u13s and u14s. I think we were undefeated so I guess you were doing something right.

In fairness to Nugget though, everyones having a crack at him so he's trying to defend his actions. He could of brought this info out soon. I'm not defending him cause he hates it when I do that, but if true, you can see why he loves writing the $$$.

If it is true, no big deal. If Alridge can get more money else where, why not leave if he does truely need the money. We lost a player a year ago back to federation because they offered him massive money compared to our reimbursement scheme.

I thought Downs Lad explained his position quite sensibly, but why bring his details into a response to my post !
To me that's getting close to privacy act issues !
