Blackpool sign dickov
SIMON Grayson could barely hide his delight after a dreary transfer deadline day suddenly turned into a frenzy of successful late night action.
The Seasiders have signed long-term midfield target Stuart Green from Crystal Palace and 23-year-old Latvian goalkeeper Pavels Steinbors.
Scottish international Paul Dickov has also agreed to come to Bloomfield Road from Manchester City, although Pool are still sweating on his arrival. It hinges on whether the FA and the Football League give clearance today.
Grayson would be delighted to have the experienced Dickov in his squad on loan for the remainder of the campaign, and if the transfer gets the go-ahead both he and Green will be in the 16 to face Leicester tomorrow.
The search for quality reinforcements went right to the wire, with Grayson and secretary Matt Williams only completing the deals in the minutes leading up to the midnight cut-off point.
Grayson is especially delighted to be on the verge of snapping up Scottish international Dickov, a striker he describes as "quality".
The manager said: "We are hopeful it will go through today, and assuming it does he will give us something different, and he has a wealth of experience as well."
Asked whether he hoped Dickov would face Leicester tomorrow, Grayson said: "He's not coming here not to be involved, so he will be in the 16."
So too will Green, who Grayson first tried to lure to Bloomfield Road in August 2006.
Back then Green chose to leave Hull andjoin Crystal Palace, mainly because he was close to Eagles manager Peter Taylor.
But with Neil Warnock now in charge at Selhurst Park and Green out of favour, the 26-year-old has joined the Seasiders on an 18-month deal, with a further 12-month option.
Grayson added: "Stuart is a good player and someone who I've admired for a long time and it is good to finally sign him," added Grayson.
Green has made 11 appearances and scored two goals for Palace this season. He started his career at Newcastle and moved to Carlisle before joining Hull.
Latvian keeper Steinbors is the final deadline day acquisition. He has joined until the end of the season from Latvian side FK Jurmala.
"He's young and we'll see how he develops," said Grayson. "He's been training with us for the last month and done well. And in the summer we'll have an option to keep him for a further year if we wish to."

PAUL Dickov is set for his Seasiders debut against Leicester City at Bloomfield Road today, taking Scott Vernon's place in the 16-man squad.
Around the same time as striker Dickov's loan from Manchester City finally went through late yesterday afternoon, the Seasiders also confirmed Vernon's permanent move to Championship rivals Colchester.
Both deals were done late on Thursday night, with Vernon describing his transfer as "a real nailbiter" after his dash south to beat the midnight deadline.
Blackpool also completed Dickov's paperwork in the nick of time, then faced an anxious wait for the deal to be sanctioned by the Football Association, Football League and Premier League yesterday.
But the Vernon deal, which involved an undisclosed fee, was even more dramatic. The striker knew nothing about it until yesterday, then set off in howling gales from Preston at 5.30pm in his race against the clock.
The striker told The Gazette: "I finally got there around 11pm. And even after I'd signed there was a last-minute hiccup over the paperwork and it didn't go through until just before midnight, so it was a real nailbiter."
Vernon spent a successful loan spell at Layer Road at the back end of the 2005/6 campaign and reminded the U's of his qualities by scoring both goals in the Seasiders' victory there five weeks ago.
Those goals earned him another run in the starting side but he was back on the bench after the 4-1 hammering at Charlton.
Vernon said: "I'm delighted the deal has gone through. I had a good time at Blackpool, particularly in the promotion season, but there have been ups and downs and it has been frustrating not to be playing regularly.
"I feel I need more football and hopefully I will have more chances at Colchester."
Manager Geraint Williams says Vernon could be a substitute at home to Sheffield United today. He said: "Scott is a good finisher, but when he was last here he really impressed me with the way he held the ball up in a goalless draw at Doncaster."
Signed from Oldham in 2005, Vernon scored 22 goals in 86 appearances for the Seasiders.
Manager Simon Grayson has promised Dickov a place in the 16 to face Leicester, one of his former clubs, today.
Grayson said: "Paul has scored a lot of goals at the highest level, he has a wealth of experience and gives us something different – a little bit of nastiness."
Dickov, 35, trained with his new team-mates yesterday as did fellow deadline day signing Stuart Green, who also hopes to be involved this afternoon.
The midfielder, signed from Crystal Palace on an 18-month deal, needed no introductions to some of his new colleagues.
The 26-year-old was a team-mate of Pool strikers Ben Burgess and Stephen McPhee at Hull City.
Green said: "I am delighted to be here. There was only one place I wanted to come. I'm looking forward to any game – if I can play (today) brilliant; if not, hopefully we get can three points and kick on."
Today's opponents Leicester were also in last-gasp transfer action: left-back Jamie Clapham, signed on loan from Wolves for the rest of the season, became Foxes boss Ian Holloway's seventh signing of the January window and takes his place in today's squad.

I could sell my house in South London and buy about 4 houses in blackpool or salford. Actually, that's a lie. Make that 5.
Evans is going quite well actually.

I'm not a cockney, so I guess I'm safe.manU4life wrote:could only buy one strip club on the promenade though and im sure the salford lads wouldnt like a cockney lad around there.
Personally, I found the best strip clubs to be in Edinburgh anyway. One bird dancing in there I considered moving to scotland for just so I could see her every day. Blackpool strip clubs were full of old slappers dancing for more scag money.
