EXCLUSIVE: A fluid Olyroo side has beaten the Socceroos 2-1 in a practice match at Marconi Stadium with goals from Matt Simon and Ruben Zadkovich. Archie Thompson scored for the senior team.
The Socceroos began the final part of the game lining up as: Bolton, A Griffiths, Vargas, Coyne, McKay, Pondeljak, Hutchinson, Griffiths, Brosque and Thompson. It was a 4-4-2 with Joel playing more as a wide midfielder breaking from deep.

Corica, Colosimo did not make it onto the park today.

The Olyroos were largely unchanged for the final 20 minutes with the side being: Velaphi, Cornthwaite, Topor Stanley, D'Apuzzo, Broxham, Celeski, Zadkovich, Bridge, Elrich, Biddle, Djite.

It was an even final 20 minutes but the better side won. The Socceroos' second half side however did perform better than the first half.

Earlier, a brilliant Ruben Zadkovich goal gave the side a 2-0 lead. He broke wide right and took the ball into the box before he chipped Clint Bolton with a curling chip.

This was shortly after Matt Simon blasted a fantastic goal to give the U23s the lead at the earlier break. The Mariner had dispossesed Jade North on the edge of the box before firing low and hard past Ante Covic.

The Socceroos scored after a Talay blast from the edge of the box was backheeled into the goal by Archie Thompson.

Best players for the Socceroos were Vargas, Adam Griffiths (as a left back), Thompson, Pantelis, Griffiths and Pondeljak.

For the Olyroos: Cornthwaite, Musialik, Zadkovich and Celeski.

Man of the match: Robert Cornthwaite.

It does make sense that this happens considering the Socceroos haven't exactly played together yet and the Olyroos have come through a lengthy testing qualification run...

Maybe we should just put the Olyroos up against Qatar?

Interesting thought...

I don't think there is anyone better on the left for Australia at the moment, except maybe Harry Kewell...

Is Carney a full back or winger?

Olyroos squad is much better than the a-league senior squad. If Australia got any chance they should play a 5-3-2 system which they need to attack the wings with pace with hopefully two good strikers up front.

Carney would be our best option on the left, kewell free behind the strikers. Not sure, but i think Carney's original postion was right back.. could be wrong.

I guess the results thus far show that the a largely olyroo based socceroos would be the safest bet. They've been together and played together the longest out of the rest.

On one hand, many people are bagging Cornthwaite for his inabilities as a defender, yet he gets MOTM in this game...against the best local A League players.

Something is amiss here.

I have come to form an opinion that we are not good judges of local talent.

Most everyone on this forum bags Kellogs and screams out for more or others from the local clubs to be used. Yet having seen most of the BEST Super League players in this past 8 months, I don't think any of them are any better than Robbie.

But onto the subject at hand, for crying out loud, it was their first bloody hit out under Pim, there will be plenty of changes between now and the 6th February just you wait and see.

Agreed. First (and second and third) hit outs mean very little as far as results go. I am concerned that this first test is about 3 weeks away from our match against Qatar.

Pim will be trying many players in many positions in changing formations to see what clicks. The Olyroos have been playing together for quite some time.

I'm looking forward to our Qatar test in Melbourne on Feb 6

Interesting to read that some of the European Socceroos are putting their hand up for the Qatar game on the 6th.

Its going to be a tough one to call, who would you use?

If the Europeans are putting their hand up I'd take them - providing they were in my long term plans. Then again, if you're judged by performance, then you need results; so then I'd probably do what (and take) whoever necessary to ensure qualification - I'm pretty sure the coach's bonu$ depends on it.

Who has put their hand up? Cahill, Viduka, Emerton?
