Almunia for England?

Post by Piola »

It's a story designed to infuriate Germany's Number 1 Jens Lehmann - but the Spaniard who has displaced him at Arsenal could soon become the England goalkeeper.

Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia could be vying with North London rival Paul Robinson of Tottenham for the job between the posts for England.

How come? Well, as the Daily Mail reports, Spaniard Almunia is just one year away from qualifying as a British citizen through residency.

And because he has never represented Spain at any level, the 30-year-old keeper would then be eligible to play for England.

It's the sort of scenario that would drive to distraction those advocating quotas on foreign imports. And quite what reacton it would elicit from Messrs Blatter, Platini and of course Herr Lehmann is anybody's guess.

But the prospective Englishman Almunia revealed thoughtfully to Spanish newspaper El Mundo: "'I would never close the door on people who have shown me so much affection."

"If I can lend England a hand once the time comes for me to be eligible — and I want to thank the country for the support it has shown me — I don't see why I shouldn't play for them. I don't rule it out."

--------------------------------------

hahaha look on the bright side, at least Arsenal will have an Englishman in their starting xi

Thatd be good. If Paul Robinson can lob him from 150 yards could you imagine what international strikers would do to him.

See my previous post on international qualification. Alumnia is not English and should not be allowed the pride of wearing the 3 lions.

Of course he is, Kevin Pieterson was entitled to a British passport at birth. His mother is English. :?

And since when have lions been native to England?
I always thought they came from Africa.

The sun never sets on the British Empire, large parts of Africa are part of the greatest empire the world has ever seen.

No but they are native to countries that we owned. Could be worse, we could eat the animals on our badge.

Same thing. We forcibly occupied them, therefore owned them. Helped them develop, a bit like a little country called australia.

So if Manuel Almunia owns a house in England he is qualified to represent England under your logic?

The point is if he gains British citizenship through residency he'll be more english than your three lions. Irrespective of who occupied the land, lions are native to Africa

The three lions have been the English coat of arms for over 800 years. Richard the Lionheart's coat of arms to be precise.
