Roma 2 - 0 Cagliari
Good win by Roma this morning and good to see Totti back and Taddei firing!
Francesco Totti made his comeback, but it was Rodrigo Taddei who shone with a brace as Roma saw off Cagliari 2-0.
This match was called off on November 11 after the tragic death of 28-year-old Lazio fan Gabriele Sandri. He was in the back of a car when a police officer's gun accidentally went off, killing him instantly, in a motorway service station near Arezzo. When the two teams did meet at the Olimpico on December 5, Roma welcomed back Francesco Totti for his first game since picking up an ankle injury on October 23. This was a family affair, as Cagliari star Daniele Conti is the son of Roma director Bruno Conti.
Within four minutes Totti had combined with Rodrigo Taddei for the Brazilian to drill just wide, but Mirko Vucinic wasted a golden opportunity moments later. The Montenegrin trapped the ball to waltz round goalkeeper Marruocco, but then incredibly missed an open goal.
Cagliari fought back immediately, as Ferri's left-foot strike skimmed the frame of the goal, then from the resulting corner Alessandro Budel's piledriver actually clipped the woodwork.
This was Nedo Sonetti's third match on the Sardinian bench after defeat to Milan and a 0-0 draw with Livorno. Foggia should have given them the lead on the counter following Juan's error, but rather than passing to the unmarked Robert Acquafresca he ballooned over the bar.
Totti went on a strong run and was brought down by Paolo Bianco, then blasted the resulting free kick into the wall. The captain was then halted when clear on goal for an incorrect offside flag.
Roma finally broke the deadlock on 28 minutes thanks to some dismal defending. David Pizarro's free kick found Taddei totally unmarked for a free header that he could not miss.
Acquafresca was crowded out in the box, but more chaotic defending allowed the Giallorossi - and Taddei - to double their tally. Goalkeeper Marruocco ran out to close down Amantino Mancini as he ran on to a deflected Vucinic through ball, but it came out to Taddei for a precise lob into the empty net. It was the Brazilian's third goal in two games after two months out injured.
Totti's wonderful backheel flick set Mancini running and the low drive shaved the far post.
Cagliari went for broke in the second half, throwing on striker Alessandro Matri for a 4-3-3 system. Daniele De Rossi felt the full brunt of Conti's free kick as it struck him in the face, then Totti created a chance fired wide by Vucinic and the captain's free kick was over the bar. This was Totti's first game in almost two months, so he was substituted by Ludovic Giuly after 63 minutes.
Alexander Doni was tested by a magnificent left-foot Budel volley that was sneaking low into the near corner, but the Brazilian goalkeeper did well to parry.
Roma also attempted a spectacular goal, Vucinic's volley with the outside of his right foot not powerful enough to beat Ballotta. Matri's effort was deflected over by Philippe Mexes and Doni had his palms stung by a fierce Foggia strike.
Conti tried to score against his old club from distance, but it was easily smothered by Doni.
Mancini was very unlucky not to break his drought with a sensational goal, as he moved the ball around to drop his marker and smacked the crossbar with a screamer.

Seriously, if you can claim some points before the second round of matches where you guys have nearly all the big teams in a two month period, and mabye get two or three there, a UEFA Cup place is certainly up for grabs.

All jokes aside, I will be very happy to avoid relegation. Anything above mid table will be a massive bonus!

Roma have a great starting 11 but have managed to add some depth to their squad this year.
Can't see them falling behind over Christmas, Winter championship will probably be decided on the last round.

Spaletti (Uncle Fester 2) did well recruiting Giuly. The frenchman has slotted in almost perfectly. Vucinic is in hot form in Europe and Taddei cant go wrong at the moment. Is the usual now a Taddei with Vucinic and Totti up front where does Mancini slot in on the left? Mancini and Vucinic up front with Totti and Taddei behind seems like the way to go to make the squad as strong as possible, but i dont think that leaves very much defensively in the midfield.

Thats ok, but we struggled to get out of C2.
Until De Laurentis bought the club and purchased some quality players, Napoli look very good for the next 5 years at least.
Spoken like a person who knows their team is getting relegated, ey Reggina fan!

Make sure you kep close to Inter because you guys are the only ones who can win the Scudetto besides them this season.
I think juve and roma can challenge inter - juve have been doing well and trezeguet is in special form at the moment!
surprised to see udinese and atalanta up there - but i think milan will turn it around and end up third or fourth

Reggina wont get relegated this year, they cant. The fans cant take it it will be the final blow to the head.
Theyll stay up there in the last few rounds of the season, big clubs always take pity on reggina toward that end after they have achieved goals.
What is the final 5 games like for reggina? that will be the deciding factor.

Napoli clearly more succesful but Reggina have been the better side in the last 10 years. Reggina is also only really 20 years old, before that they were an amature team.MilanManiac wrote:SORRY to say Pirlo my good good friend, Napoli have won 3? more titles over Reggina so success might be in the Napolitan side's favour.
