Juniors poaching

Post by gazza »

Picked up from another forum a hint that a former zone coach, took other clubs juniors in the squad to the club he's going to be coaching next year.
Any idea who's involved?

If it is the case, unbelievable!!

What a coach, he can win the league at junior level with the best players. Why doesn't he try and develop the players that are there!!

Silent P, wasnt it you in another topic, that said it is in the clubs best interest to pick the best players when trials come along ???

I quote, "I can see where Zelko is coming from but what about the club? Shouldn't the coach be picking the best players at that time for the club's sake?"

I did Zeljko, but I meant players that come along to trials not poaching players.

He would have poached them to come to trials, and then picked them.

Have you ever thought that the kids could have actually liked him as a coach and that they decided to try out for his club?

I know another club where this has happened but it was not the zone coach poaching rather the kids really liked what he was doing and went and trialled at his club.....why should he not then pick the best players available.....they must have been unhappy with their existing coach or club to want to move on......I know another club that did not even send any kids out for the zone trials because they were worried about losing them....although they gave a list to FFSA.....a number of those kids have now left the club anyway.....

Have heard a few clubs are not happy with losing players to a 2008 Under 14 team south of the city where the coach was Zone coach in 2007 how ever to say they were "poached" may not be the case at all.

How do you define "poaching"?

it is not the first or the last time that this will happen, and its no different than when a whole team decides to go in different directions and end up at other clubs, no one holds a gun to their heads.

The coach in question is an excellent coach, and Zeljko, you would be the first to admit, his main concern is the welfare of the kids and their development.

If the kids learn more from him, than they do from their present club coach, so be it.

I don't think that is poaching. The kids and their parents have a loyalty to themselves, and certainly not to a federation club, that might not reselect them, and therefore show no regard to their future.

No one has a permanent contract in life, so make the most of your opportunities.

i heard another club doing the same thing,it could be the same club, not sending there players to zone because most of the players are hand picked before. there was a player under 12s his name was cain & he must of been in the top 5 players in the state for his age, & he didnt even get a look in. he left the club because his parents moved to brisbane. this club now has more juniors than ever. the year before a certain club was poaching there players at these zones trials & the club have a right to be concern. they are not happy with the current system.

There's two issues here:

1) The zone comeptition is at risk of losing the best players, due to the fears of the clubs regarding losing them to the Zone coaches club. Remedy: Zone coaches should not be affiliated with any Junior club

2) Happy players don't move clubs. Simple as that. If they're moving its because they were offered or could see that there was something better elsewhere, and if they don't end up with the zone coach's club, chances are they'll end up somewhere else anyway

You make some valid points.

On issue; No.2 I agree totally. Players do not move without a valid reason!

Issue; No.1 Yes the competition is at risk; rumours can damage the competition and I hope that it is only a minority that 'poach', most coaches do not (I did not).
However there were parents on the team that talked to others about changing clubs; could this be classed as poaching? It's a fact of life; some people will always look around for greener grass.
There aren't enough 'non-affiliated' coaches around, so it's up to everyone to do the right thing; coaches, clubs, parents and players.

For the sake of the kids lets not damage the reputation of the competition; it was a fantastic weekend, every kid on my team could not stop talking about how much fun they had, they loved it and will remeber it for ever. Some even asked about next years comp 8)

Zone coaches should be given the best kids along with being given 3 or 4 other coaches in the lead up (not to run or take over) to assist and learn from the coach, this would then allow a greater spread of knowledge.

as for the comp all the kids should be given a chance regardless of ability, after all the ZONE coach will then decide if they are what he wants, the clubs that fail to put kids up for trial deserve to loose the kids.

people may think that it might be a bit much for the coach to sort and decide a squad from 50 - 100 players but they too are applying their ability and knowledge which will be given a true test & thats great for all :D

I don't understand what you're saying; 'Zone coaches should be given the best kids but during the comp all kids should be given a chance, regardless of ability'.

sorry forgot to put the stop in....
1,By best kids I mean that no club should hold back the best child in fear he may move or follow the zone coach.

2, in ref to allowing all kids to try out regardless of ability let the zone coach pick what he wants.

My son has been in the zone weekend several years now and has had a great time it is a good experience for all the boys & girls not only do they get exposure and coached by other coaches they get to make a lot of knew friends along the way.

Well done to Para Hills for hosting another succesfull weekend from what i heard all had a great time. :o including us.

As for poaching that is always going to happen not only in zone weekends but even throughout the season, so many people know each other in the soccer world, so my thoughts are you will never stop it. But i agree with some of the other comments if the kid is happy at his club and is getting a fair run and good coaching they wont leave the grass isnt always greener on the other side.

To finish i would like to wish all the kids good luck for the up coming season enjoy

Poaching is relevant for clubs close to each other.

Whilst any club that takes on Junior players that have to travel a reasonable distance are wasting their time and those spots should go to local junior players, because at 17-20 year of age range most will go local.

this club that thrives it self on junior level seem to be in the mix of these sort things every year.one team in that junior level was not very popular with the parents with what happened during the year, now maybe the coach is not happy at the club and decided to move on to another club, and the parents who are happy with the coach decided to move with him.campbelltown have a good look at yourselves.start developing players for the wright reasons and not your own

What I would like to know is have the kids left because they want to improve and develop their skills with better coaching or do they think they have an opportunity to finish top of league for a particular club? Sadly I think considering our culture the answer will be the later.

As for clubs not allowing kids to be nominated for zone thats appalling who are they looking after not the kid.

I have had a parent tell me that their child has been asked out to play for another club in the same comp because they have seen how well he plays and hes been with me 3 yrs which is fine but the kids only 7 whats the point?

The sooner we have the FFSA, clubs, parents and kids focusing on development and not winning the better we and the kids will be.
