3-1 win Cyprus. solid result. 13 points, one of their best hauls thus far. in any other group would be very respectable, but they way results have gone in this group, its doesnt make the stats look as good. mid range teams all very even.

Euro 2008 - Wales crumble in Cyprus
Eurosport - Sat, 13 Oct 22:39:00 2007

A second-half collapse saw Wales throw away a half-time lead as they fell to a 3-1 defeat in Cyprus.

Cyprus skipper Yiannis Okkas was the architect of their defeat, scoring two of the home side"s three goals, which all came in a breathtaking 20-minute attacking period in the second half.

The omens had looked good for John Toshack's side in the build-up to the match as the teams lined up in a barely full Neo GSP Stadium in Nicosia.

You could hear a pin drop as the national anthems echoed around the stadium and the Wales side must have felt that Cyprus, despite their impressive home record in this qualifying campaign so far, were there for the taking.

Their captain Craig Bellamy, who had recovered in just 12 days from groin surgery to line up for his country, clearly thought so. With just two minutes on the clock, the West Ham forward was make a lightening run down the left flank which allowed him to cross precisely for Joe Ledley in the box. The Cardiff man measured his effort on goal, but it bobbled agonisingly wide of the left-hand post.

It was Wales' other star man who played a major part in the breakthrough for the away side after 19 minutes. When Wales won a free-kick wide on the left outside the Cyprus penalty area, all eyes were on Gareth Bale, whose cultured left-foot has proved so effective over the past 18 months.

And the Spurs man didn't disappoint, delivering a sweet cross which James Collins coolly side-footed home to give Wales the lead.

Bellamy's pace was still causing Cyprus problems and just before the half-hour mark another trademark run, this time down the right flank, presented Wales with another chance. He crossed towards Ledley again, but he was penalised for an innocuous-looking push on a defender.

Just a minute later Cyprus were appealing for a penalty as Okkas and Coyne raced each other for a high through ball. But the Welsh keeper, in for the injured Wayne Hennessey, had clearly won the ball and the Cypriot's theatrics were rightly dismissed by the referee.

There were some more danger signs for Wales before the break, with Makrides firing a good chance wide after a flowing move by Cyprus, but overall the half-time scoreline looked fair.

The second was a completely different affair, however, and Okkas thought he had brought his side level after only 90 seconds of the period as he slotted home after being put clean through on goal. His effort was ruled out for offside though – a decision that replays could not really verify one way or the other.

With just under an hour gone, Okkas did manage to find the net, however, as he headed home after being left unmarked in the box from a free kick by Aloneftis from the right.

And ten minutes later he was reeling away in celebration again after again being set up by Aloneftis, who had only managed to bundle the ball forward after getting on to the end of a wicked cross from the right. Like all good strikers though, Okkas was on hand to slam the ball into the empty net to give Cyprus the lead.

Ten minutes later it was all over, with substitute Constantinos Charalambidis heading the third from point-blank range after being teed-up by fellow replacement Yiassoumi.

The result pushes Wales down to sixth in Group D of the Euro 2008 qualifiers, with only for San Marino, who they face on Wednesday, behind them in the standings.
