if we play the same formation as the one utilised for the France game, Lucarelli or Iaquinta has to be the lone man up front...preferbaly Lucarelli.
Although I wouldn't mind going back to the 4-2-3-1:
--------------------Buffon------------------------
Oddo----Cannavaro----Barzagli----Zambrotta
-------------De Rossi-----Pirlo-------------------
Foggia------------Aquilani----------Quagliarella
-------------------Lucarelli-----------------------
Back four is the same as the France game and they were solid enough then and should be able to keep out the Ukrainians.
De Rossi would have a more defensive role and it allows Pirlo to do what he does best - being the deep lying playmaker. Now assuming Pirlo is not going to be fit, which is a chance, Ambrosini would come in for Pirlo and De Rossi would act as the deep playmaker.
Starting Foggia would be a risk since it would be his debut in such a high pressure match, but he could spring a surprise vs the Ukrainians who I'd imagine would have seen very little of him. Plus I don't think Camoranesi should play. I also don't think Del Piero should start. Out of Quagliarella and Di Natale, i'd start Quagliarella. Perhaps Del Piero could come off the bench.
Lucarelli would plkay as Toni does, who can hold it up for the players making the deep runs, like Aquilani would, or he can take a defender on. He is better in this system than Inzaghi would be, hence why he should start.

I still can't believe McLarren can coach at International level.Juventino wrote:Alomost the same position correct...but you overlook the fact that Italy is the world champion and we have plenty of depth in the team and a hell of a lot of tactical ability. England lacks this and furthermore have a fool in charge of the team.

Italy Do Enough To Beat Ukraine
It wasn't pretty, and there are still questions to be asked of the Azzurri, but the World Champions showed sufficient class to twice take the lead against Ukraine, holding on for an absolutely vital win...
Udinese's Antonio di Natale (pictured) proved the hero as he netted goals in each half, setting Italy en route to a hard-fought win over Ukraine in Kiev.
Neither side showed anything even approaching its full potential in this scrappy game, but Italy twice found cutting edge to sink Ukraine, di Natale's goals coming on either side of Andriy Shevchenko's 71st minute strike.
Within minutes, 'Sheva', Chelsea's forgotten man, reminded the footballing world that he was very much alive and well as his sweet free-kick rattled the woodwork.
Italy were shocked into waking up, but the Azzurri struggled to find any early consistency to their play, di Natale firing home an early Italian effort well wide.
Indeed, for these two early chances, the game was increasingly being bogged down in midfield until the 25 minute mark.
Then, Ukraine were the first to carve out real chances, the ever-dangerous Shevchenko once again taking advantage of good work up the right to come very close to opening the scoring.
Italy held most of the possession at this point, only for Ukraine to look far more dangerous on the break - but the Azzurri showed why they're world champions with an opportunist goal five minutes before the interval.
Pirlo put in some superb work to set up Udinese's Antonio di Natale in the box for a neat finish, and Italy were in control.
Nonetheless, Roberto Donadoni must have been perturbed heading into the half. His side had been torn up on the flanks, Panucci in particular looking every one of his 34 years, and the defence was not sure of itself at all.
But for all that, Italy had shown why they can never quite be discounted, as Ukraine went to rue missed chances.
Going into the second half and Ukraine lost their attacking flair somewhat, perhaps discouraged by di Natale's strike that threatened to undo all their good work.
Still, Italy, while threatening at times, did not take their chances to kill the game off before the Ukraine recovery.
And when the yellow-blue recovery came, it came with a goal. And, of course, it was from Andriy Shevchenko. Rusol set 'Sheva' up for a trademark finish right into the top corner, and it was game on.
Once again, though, it was di Natale to the rescue, the Udinese youngster being put one-on-one after a slide-rule through ball from the classy Ambrosini.
It was perhaps a moment of lax defending but, moreover, it was a great attack from nothing, and one that Italy are always good for.
And that sealed the win, as Ukraine couldn't muster their first half spirit to come back from a second setback.
Italy moved up to second in the group, given Scotland's shock win over France, while Ukraine will need to win all of their remaining fixtures to be in with a realistic chance of qualification.

YESS!!! 2-1. It was difficult, but we came away with the victory. A much needed victory.
Well I was saying Di Natale wasn't clinical enough in front of goal and he proved me wrong with a nice double. The first after a typically beautiful Pirlo cross in which he glanced in to the far post. The second was the invention of Ambrosini on the halfway line who saw Di Natale free. he held his run, Ambrosini played it over the top and Di Natale was through on goal, approached Shovkovsky and put it past him. I was rather nervous at that moment but he didn't let us down.
I felt the team played ok, we soaked up a lot of pressure. It was a typical away performance. Ukraine can probably count themselves a little unlucky to not get at least a point, possibly three. Shevchenko hit the post with a long range free kick in the second minute, forced Buffon to knock away another dangerous free kick, missed a few chances through on goal and got the equaliser and the ball ricocheted off Aquilani. So a mixed night for Sheva. Voronin was a threat when he came on, not so much in the box, but as a creater.
Buffon was good for us. Some good saves which kept us in it. The defence was a bit of a mixed bag. A few times Cannavaro and Barzagli looked shaky but generally they did deal with the threats. They were put under a lot of pressure. Ukraine was looking to play balls over the top in the first half and get behind Canna and Barzagli, which we dealt with, but once they played the ball on the ground, we were put under more pressure. Zambrotta and Panucci didn't get forward a lot, credit to Ukraine for shutting their runs really until late in the game. Pannuci was solid in his first Italy game in over 3 years.
Ambrosini was alright, a lot of solid defensive work and he set up the winner. More of a silent hero, whereas Gattuso is far more charismatic in the centre of the park and more intense. However, Ambro did what he needed to do. Pirlo was good as well. Tried to control the game's pace whenever he could and he was spraying some nice passes. A good cross to set up the first goal. Camoranesi was erratic. He would so some nice turns or tackles, but then not hit a target 10 meters away. He needs to work onhis consistency. Di Natale, other than the two goals wasn't really involved, but I guess he did what nobody else did and taht was get into goalscoring positions. Perrotta was virtually non-existant in the position behind Iaquinta. When Aquilani came on he was more noticeable, but was acting more as a central than attacking midfielder. Problem for Perrotta and Aquilani in an attacing sense was that they needed to work off Iaquinta to get into the game and that wasn't happening at all.
Iaquinat wasn't that good. Had to use his body more and hold up the ball. It didn't really happen. Not any real chance on goal for him tonight either.
Italy ratings -
Buffon - 6.5
Zambrotta - 6
Cannavaro - 6
Barzagli - 6
Panucci - 6
Ambrosini - 6.5
Pirlo - 6.5
Camoranesi - 5.5
Di Natale - 7
Perrotta - 5.5
Iaquinta - 5.5
Oddo - 6
Aquilani - 6
Quagliarella - No rating.
So you can see most players were solid rather than spectacular. It was a typical away performance.
We did what we had to do,which was win, it wasn't pretty, but it was three points. De Rossi said before the game that Italy's class would shine through and this is what happened. Next at home to Georgia. Gattuso returns, Cannavaro misses out through suspension.
