Final Series in the Amateur League

Post by Baggio »

What do you think about having finals in the amateur league? A lot of my mates play the egg ball game and they are now preparing for finals, I personally think it would be great, nothing like finals footy. I know that all the other leagues in the world have the 1st passed the post system but in Australia with the AFL & Rugby we have all been brought up with finals. We could still reward the team that finishes top. A lot of teams at this stage of the year either have no chance of promotion and no chance of relegation, but if there was a top 4 or 5 spot up for grab it would definitely make it more exciting for those teams.
Just a thought, what do you think

I love the idea of finals, there's nothing like waking up before playing a final, so pumped up.....i think it be an awesome idea however may or could only suit a number of leagues, say Div1,2,3 possible4 on a Sunday and maybe Divs1 & 2 on Satuday

i think its a great idea A League do it so why dont we??.. not just for the players themselves but for the club also.

Some clubs struggle to survive financially and with only 9 league games @ home during the year this is only a small window of opportunity for clubs to make some $$.. now with introducing a final system or extending the league this will give clubs more opportunity to financially rep the rewards and also give clubs the opp to attract more sponsorship etc

Look @ the crowd Gardens v Downs imagine the crowds you would pull for a finals system - Make Fed players/clubs even more jealous

But from a players point of view i would love it.. 18 games is just not enough.. & it will give us even more of a chance to knock those boys from the Downs off :D

Finals series does not necessarily reward the best team throughout the season. I reckon the finals series is a joke. It rewards mediocrity, which is exaclty what AFL and NRL are when compared to codes around the world.

Well said. First past the post rewards the most consistant side. Cup rewards and unbeaten side and that's enough.

A finals set up just allowssome knobs who finish second or below to celebrate something they didn't win and in my eyes will never be anything more than a post season mini tournament

First past the post is defnitely the way to go!

There is the divisional play offs which reward finishing first and you get to test yourself against other divisions much like the cup, but from what I understand clubs don't get anything for winning it.

League and cup should be it!

First wins 2nd-5th play for promotion unless of course it's Division 1 but the lower divisions need more to play for as many don't take cup seriously due to lack of squad numbers

They done it a few years back in the State and Premier league days in the federation. Was one of the best times to watch soccer.

So much atmosphere, would love to see it come to the ameture league!

and what the bottom team goes down and the three above them play off for relegation???? all you achieve by doing that is end up with a team in a league when they dont deserve to be there. top 2 go up, bottom 2 go down. going on the last few seasons third place will see you go up aswell

We all seem to forget one thing: our grounds(or 95% of them) are only available from the 1st April to the 30th of September,26 weeks in all. With 18 League games and 4-5 Cup rounds, how to you fit in an extra 3-4 weeks???Thats the reason that we only have 10 team divisions!Any suggestions??

Penalty 11 not all grounds are unavailable after 30th of September, you could play double headers for each division at nuetral grounds, imagine that the weather would be warmer the crowds would be fantastic, i personally think it would be great idea

It was fun beating Cumberland 2-0 in the grand final though wasn't it. I've got a copy of the game. At the end I run up to you and celebrated by jumping up onto you and you holding me there for a little too long. I jumped so high I pretty much had my balls in your face and I think you might have liked it. We also had some fun celebrating afterwards but I have always regretted going to Scott Mansell's before we went out.

I cant ever see the amatuer league changing the way its been done for years. Alot of teams would have players out after the finish of the regular season anyway.

not a fan of the finals series, un til i gave it more thought, could have top 4 play off, bottom 2 in league get relagated as normal, could have 1st play 2nd, winner straight to final, 3rd play 4th, loser eliminated, winner plays loser of other game, winner into the final,
could give clubs something to play for at this time of year when your stuck mid table doing f/a, would definitely be exciting with big crowds,
just a thought but would never happen!

Yeah not a fan of the finals. can understand why clubs want more games at home and all, for profit, but it is an amatuer league. With 18 league games plus cup games and trial games you can play up to 25-30 games. also with the pre season it makes it probably 35 weeks in total. imagine adding on 3 finals games. Too much for the sunday hacker. First past the post has always been fair so no need to change.
WHY DO THEY CALL IT OVALTINE? I MEAN ITS ROUND, WHY DONT THEY CALL IT ROUNDTINE.

yeah , your probably right, season would go on too long, not a bad topic for discussion though, would hate to finish clear top and get stung in the finals , ouch!
