Women's Football, Australia and Matildas
Today showed the whole flawed system of women's football in Australia. they pick big lumbering giants with little technical ability. Most girls cant kick two feet, they are predictable and the little technical koreans killed them. At least the Australians, all blond haired and pony tails looked cute.
This is a joke. The whole system needs changing from State selection, to Sensation players. The have to change coach, Sermani is a fool and if he was any good he would be coaching an ALeague team not Mickey Mousing it with the Matildas.
Get rid of the giants who just run fast and get some girls who can play football.

Watched the game on TV, I have to say I was very dissapointed in the standard of the Aussie team, some of them couldnt even kick the ball properly :? The Korean team did at least have some players who looked as though they were competent players.
I dont ean to be disrespectful but if that is the best the womens game has to offer then it has a long way to go.

Hi Pol Pot & other contributors.
Dissapointing game. Unfortunately not unexpected. Where to from here?
A synopsis for you to ponder:
World Cup (to qulaify)
Under 20's Championships (to qualify)
Under 17's (Did not qualify)
No National for the last 2 years.
A local Super Prems league that is not where it was a few years ago.
Again. Where to from here? Encourage our players to head o/s and ply their craft in competitive leagues where they can further enhance their skills?
As with you PP, I have had time to reflect on the situation and the positive thing is that there is plenty of room for improvement. If not pursued, their is a risk of not qualifying for future WC's and Olympics. The move to the Asian Confederation is a good one but when put to the test, we in Australia can see where we're at.
Comments peoples?

From my limited exposure around the womens' game, Skills is not what is being taught and encouraged. Those players who have skill and ability are quickly told to "stop being fancy" and play simple balls. They are made to feel somewhat inferior or a show off if they show skill above and beyond team mates and opposition. In the boys comp its encouraged and developed. Trying to teach a girl to do the Zidane or Cruyff at 17+ is a WOFTAM!
Hence why we have athletes in the Matildas who can bench press big weights. Who can run "quick" and have a good Beep Test but as you said PP lack skill. They lost the game way before kick off by trying to slow the game down and play high balls to expose the little asian side. Funny thing though, the first goal came from a Korean cross and the player headed it in.
The Asian League/Confederation is where Australian Football belongs however, does the current team belong there?
Not having a WNSL is another blunder. How else can new talent to replace a few of ther the ageing Matildas come from? Using the various Institute of Sports as the sole recruiting pathway is not the only answer.

Technical Skills is part elite talent development. No idea what WOFTAM stands for, sorry...but I know of plenty of 13 and 14 yo girls who know how to do the Cruyff turn plus half a dozen other tricks and turns that can be used effectively in a match. IMO it's not about being fancy. It's about confidence on the ball, the ability to get out of a tight space, to keep possesion when support is not immediately available, the ability to deceive to create a goal scoring opportunity and the ability to buy a few seconds so that support can arrive.SAD GAL wrote:From my limited exposure around the womens' game, Skills is not what is being taught and encouraged. Playing simple is necessary...in defence, but in attack a risk or two can sometimes pay dividends so it should be encouraged.
For the Game. For the World.

I agree with the damage not having a WNSL is doing, but it comes down to funding as usual. The tyranny of distance, lack of significant population, lack of media coverage, and lack of corporate support unfortunately is the problem.
Maybe each A League Team could have a senior women's side also.
They could then play the same A-League sides using the same fixtures. The spectators would get to see two games instead of one.

The girl that came on in the second half...smaller brunette , Davanna something?...more like her. The taller Gill girl, send her home or run 400 metres in the Olympics. banging into Korean backs while they just hold their ground.
The second goal scored by Nth Korea came from an overlapping run on the right hand side, all alone. Who was picking her up? her technique in hitting the ball flat and on target was brilliant. Australia tried a few shots, very lame, soft and ineffectual.
I have seen a few women's games and when they screw up everybody claps and supports. Bad luck try again, slaps on the bum etc. No one feels accountable lest they are isolated by the group. There was an opportunity in the first half where the centre forward turned and had a shot. It was with no aggression, no venom no menace. Had it been a bloke he would have bulldozed the thing into the back of the net.
Its a technique and an aggression issue and it must be addressed. High technique played under high pressure. Australia lacked both.
