Denmark were always a good side. Underdog story because of the way it happened but it was an 8 team tournament. Hardly mind blowing that they would win.

Just had a great suggestion from a facebook post.
All the automatic places stay the same.
All the play off spots all go in together. Put all the European teams in one hat and all the others (which was 6, so add in 2 more) in another hat. Winner goes to the world cup. You will still get a WORLD tournament but the best teams will get in, not also rans from other places.

Because of the issues with travelling I would say keep qualification as it is apart from the play offs. Peru are ranked 10th in the world. NZ were the only team not to lose a game last world cup yet Brazil lost 7-1 in a game.

would still not prevent the situation we have now where Italy and Netherlands are out and Australia are in.

You would have a pot of 6 UEFA top seeds and another pot of 2 UEFA, 1 AFC, 1 CONCACAF, 1 CONMEBOL and 1 OCEANiA.
Then you would draw 6 playoffs from there. Much fairer than the current system.
Netherlands would still miss out, but that's tough shit if you finish 3rd.

Sounds like the "big teams" are a bit scared of losing to the "not so big teams".
One day they might wake up and understand that this makes the World Cup special and open to all sorts of results, including all sorts of upsets.
