Craig Laird's SAASL Sunday Premier Division Round Up
League Round 5 - Match of the Day
SALISBURY Florina have moved to 2nd place after a deserved 2-0 win over rival Salisbury Inter at Underdown Park.
Inter and Florina came into the game in 3rd and 4th position respectively and the opening half hour was an even affair before Florina crafted a chance that was clinically put away by Alex Djorem on 34 minutes.
Inter almost hit straight back through Chris Fleming whose long distance shot went narrowly over the cross bar.
Florina came close to doubling their lead on the stroke of half time when Craig Johnstone shot was well saved before Kale Wicker blasted the rebound over the bar.
Inter were reduced to 10 men on 66 minutes and it got worse on 74 minutes when substitute Jason Trimboli was taken down in the box and he duly converted the spot kick to make it 2-0.
On 80 minutes Inter had a lifeline through a penalty but Flemings spot kick was well saved by Isaac Burns.
Florina coach Jeff McCormack “We are really pleased with our start to the season against some really good competition.”
ELIZABETH Downs have moved five points clear at the top after an entertaining 7-3 win over Para Hills East at Para Hills Oval.
East got off to the perfect start when Angus Ducker cut in from the left before blasting home a cracking goal. The lead was short lived however as the inform Billy Allotey netted a minute later and the Maroons went to the break with a 3-1 advantage through another Allotey strike and a goal from Matt Watson.
After the break Scott Lindsay converted from the spot to make it 4-1 before Aaron Walters scored to give East a lifeline.
The visitors showed their class with Allotey completing his hat trick along with goals from Ben McMullen and Matt Watson before Aaron Smith converted a late penalty for East.
East coach Ryan Bastable had no complaints “We were beaten by a better team today.”
AN Aaron Westervelt brace has helped Parafield Gardens to a shock 3-2 win over Brahma Lodge at Cockburn Green.
Champions Brahma Lodge went to the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to a Michael Mullen penalty but that was cancelled out early in the 2nd half through a trade mark Westervelt free kick.
Brahma regained their advantage almost immediately through another Mullen strike before Gardens drew level for a 2nd time through Alban Martini.
Gardens then grabbed the winner on 70 minutes when Westervelt rounded a player before slotting his chance and sending a message that Gardens are on the rise.
INGLE Farm moved out of the bottom two with a much needed 1-0 win over Southern Knights at Walkleys Park.
The only goal of the game came on the half hour when a goal bound Matt Cocks shot was only half cleared following a save by Knights new signing keeper Faser McLean before new recruit Connor O’Donnell bundled the ball home.
Farm coach Paul Simpson “With today’s win on top of the cup win last week you can see the belief coming back into the team.”
A late Michael Francis spot kick has helped Elizabeth Vale to a 4-3 win over Modbury Vista at Richardson Oval.
The visiting Vale opened strongly with 1st half goals from James Greaves and Michael Francis and when Steve Orange netted on 50 minutes the game looked over at 3-0.
Vista were thrown a lifeline on 55 minutes when the Vale were reduced to 10 men and they duly responded by drawing level at 3-3.
In a thrilling finale Francis went on a solo run before being fouled in the box and coolly slotted the spot kick to ensure all three points went back to Moflin road.
