One Week to Go

Post by Journeyman »

One week to go until the start of the inaugural Womens National Premier League.

From what I hear, I think there are 3 , maybe 4 sides ( City, Metro, Uni and West ) who are going to battle it out for top honors with the remaining clubs much closer and improved from last season.

A few new coaches, some old faces returning and player movement will only add to what I think is an exciting year ahead for womens football.

I would include fulham in that mix as they have some interesting additions to there squad, were good last year, and on paper look a very good squad, with some good additions and players returning(if they all jell together and play as a team) they should do ok.

first half WA played ok, 4 nil up at half time and could have been many more then made 6/8 subs, to give others a taste of action, players rested in the second half, and yes as you say second half very average. Did you see any of the para hills knights game v ntc on other pitch? if so what did you think? as not sure of the final score?
Realistically in my opinion AC are far and away the best team in the WNPL, then there are 3/4 other teams below them who will fight out 2nd to 4th for a place in the finals, they will be competitive. then 6th to 8th teams will struggle to be competitive.
Again Realistically with many top players retiring, recovering from long term injuries etc from many clubs since last year then add these to some top players switching codes to play AFL with the new AFL Womens league coming up in 2017 The quality of some of the wnpl teams is not great. With many younger players given the opportunity when really they are not ready for that level, hence overal standard of the WNPL is not great.

I would not be too critical of teams just yet, some clubs still have players involved in summer sports with grand finals next week, some NPL players may be missing first game.
Results are irrelevant in trial games, all about giving everyone a run and giving new /young players a go while some of the regulars are not available. Wait until the season starts proper.
With the Matildas qualifying for the Olympics I thought that would overshadow a pretend local australian rules football competition they may not even get off the ground, judging by what you hear in the local media lately.

There has been some interesting scores in the trial games that have been played. From the ones I have seen I think this season is sure to be a good one! I didn't make it to either the westies or para hills game but I did see the Sturt v westies game, Sturt have a 2/3 great players but I don't see them being a threat to any of the big teams in the league. With some of player movement that has happened pre season there are a few just see games this year that are sure to be full on! Bring in Friday night!

hydration officer, there will be 20000 good reasons for players to swap codes from soccer to AFL and already many clubs have been effected losing players.

Is that where all Stirlings state league players have gone one week before the season kicks off, or is it just a rumor?

Stirling dropping out of State League is fact unfortunately.

Given that South has already played FFSA last week, we have scenario of last year's Div 1champs folding out of the State League after the comp has started.

I'm still hearing strong rumours of WNPL clubs who also don't make the criteria with amount of teams.

Will look on with great interest with how clubs are dealt with who don't make the criteria by the FFSA, after it was common knowledge for the past 5 months of this scenario happening, but the powers that be, sat on their hands. After all, they had the assurances from those respective clubs that the criteria had been met.

High farce

So given that Stirling fielded a fairly strong side on the weekend just gone by against Campbelltown ( judging by the result at least ) then one would assume their problem might be fielding a reserve side week in week out. If that is the case would they be allowed back into the Div 1 comp, have to start from the bottom of the social leagues again or just disappear off the face of the FFSA world?

Surely they would be allowed back in Div1 and there is no reason they shouldn't be

Straight into Div 1. Would be silly to put them anywhere else really.

I agree with your results for tonight and won't be far off the mark for the city to take it all, they will be in there for sure!

Metro-Fulham was 5-0. WA-Sturt 2-0. Does anyone know the Uni-Cumberland score?

I am overseas at the moment and so I missed the game (s) at the Elite Systems ground. I have been told that City were two nil up at half time, but missed at least six gilt edged chances to score. Apparently, it was a totally dominant display, but they couldn't add the the score and then got caught out with a lapse of concentration. Can anyone give us a report and confirm what I have been told?

That's pretty much it from what I saw- I thought PHK put on a gutsy performance. They knew they were the underdogs but weren't intimidated- hats off to them, and City were playing like they knew they were the better side (which they were). City missed a bunch of sitters.

Thanks Junior Supporter. Can you add who and what impressed you from City and Para Hills?

I'm afraid I don't know really any of the players from PHK, and I'm not a very tactically educated observer- I also didn't see a lot of the game as I was occupied with other stuff. But the Para Hills girls on the pitch seemed to be working hard for each other and not intimidated by City at all, which is a good thing and will serve them well going forward- they played very positively. I think City is an impressive side- clearly they are fit and well coached, with smart and experienced players. I'm not sure I was particularly impressed with the way they played last night- sometimes it's hard to play a less structured, more unpredictable opponent. I think everyone, including the City camp, was expecting a bigger scoreline. When they went up 2-0 I thought the floodgates had opened. Clearly Para Hills had other ideas.

Big win ? must have meant metro. Good to see PHK hold fast, (two lucky goals from City and many missed chances, dont know if i was all that impressed) metro had a field day on Fulham.

yes very surprising result Metro V Fulham because on paper Fulham have a very good squad, may take a bit of time for them to jell? as there are some good individual players but can they play in a team structure the way the coach desires??
Predictions for season But injuries will have a big impact especially playing on the hard surfaces of shores.

I was told by two spectators to the game that Fulham keeper was best player for Fulham with a number of great saves. Given the scoreline finished an emphatic 5-0, the end result could have been considerably worse. Season is very long however, and the way all teams are playing now will be very different come finals.
