2016 Wellington Sevens
I'm not really a rugby fan but this was on the big screen at my local today. I was looking at the results when I got home and noticed that after the group stages the knock out stages were divided into shield, bowl, plate and cup. With the same teams competing in two of those it had me scratching my head trying to work out the format... I got there in the end but why do they have so many knock out options for teams who have lost? Scotland beat Japan today so I was happy.
I hate screaming kids

It happens in rugby 7's at all levels, remember it happening as a kid. The idea is to make the competition last longer and gives all teams something to play for. Your position in the group decides what competition you go into Te semi final for.
I thought you only went into one of the sub competitions though, didn't think you could play in 2.

Re: 2016 Wellington Sevens
Actually just realised you can play in 2 competitions in fact some can play in 3.
All play in group stages of the cup.
Top 8 (normally 2 in each group) go to QF of cup. Bottom 2 go to competition 3 (shield??)
Losers of QF of cup go to SF of completion 2 (plate) winners go to SF of cup.
Similar happens to bottom 2 teams as well (shield and bowl)
It means all teams get to play at least 5 games in a weekends me ultimately all teams get a ranking for that tournament. Eg. England came 4th in the tournament in Wellington. Australia won the plate, so came 5th.

Can't be arsed starting a new thread.
Just watched Fiji (from the comfort of my armchair) annihilate the cheese eating surrender monkeys in Sydney, 49-5.
Some of the most outrageous sevens rugby you'll ever see.

Time for some righteous indignation
