Craig Laird - Sunday Premier Round 5 Write Up

Post by swannsong »

MATCH OF THE DAY
ELIZABETH DOWNS ( 4 ) SALISBURY INTER ( 2 )
A stirring 2nd half comeback has seen Champions Elizabeth Downs defeat Salisbury Inter 4-2 at Argana Park.
The 2014 Champions came into the game having won two in a row since losing their opening two rounds while Inter were looking to put their round 4 loss to Elizabeth Grove behind them and consolidate a top four place.
Inter had the better of the opening and on 18 minutes a thunderous strike from Michael Centrone appeared goal bound before a deflection put it out for a corner but the visitors didn’t have to wait long for the opener as the resulting corner was headed home at the back post by Marcus Marchioro.
The Maroons lifted and Braiden Gundlach saw a nice effort beaten away by Inter keeper Nick Sincock as Inter went to the break with a deserved lead.
After the break Inter continued to push and their lead was doubled on 49 minutes when Andrew Butler cut in from the left hand side before curling his shot over a helpless Ben Aldridge.
A desperate Downs started to create chances with the normally lethal Jason Trimboli missing three headers from close range.
On 65 minutes Inter had a chance to seal the game when Marchioro was through on goal but his shot was well saved by the out coming Aldridge.
That scare seemed to spark the home side and on 68 minutes they were back in the game when Scott Lindsay found substitute Ben McMullen who finished coolly.
Lindsay was now taking control of the midfield and when he played in Trimboli three minutes later Trimboli hammered home from 15 yards to make it 2-2.
The champions were now going forward in waves and when a corner on 77 minutes wasn’t cleared Gundlach bundled the ball into the net to put the Maroons 3-2 up.
On 81 minutes a Nathan Day free kick was headed home by Michael Cartwright to cap of an amazing 13 minute spell that saw the Downs resurrect their season to run out 4-2 winners.
Downs Coach Alan Mottram “We can’t afford to lose any games so to come back the way the boys did was outstanding. I thought both substitutes Ben McMullen and Tommy Blackett really made a difference”.
Inter Coach Steve Cook “The lads gave their all today but credit to the Downs, we need to learn from this and get better”.

FULHAM ( 0 ) PARA HILLS WEST ( 1 )
An inspired goalkeeping performance by Dave Brook has helped Para Hills West to a much needed 1-0 victory over Fulham at Collins Reserve.
Westies travelled to Fulham having gained only one point from their opening four games while Fulham were looking to build on an encouraging start including a 1-1 draw with League leader Ingle Farm in round four.
Fulham started the better and had some good opportunities only to be denied by Brook in the Westies goal.
Para Hills West scored the fewest goals in the Premier division in 2014 and have netted only twice in the opening four rounds but they took the lead on 23 minutes thanks to an audacious effort by Kurtis Cracknell.
A long ball from keeper Brook was only partially cleared to Cracknell who let fly from 40 yards to give Westies a surprise lead.
Fulham pushed hard before and after the break in search of an equalizer but they couldn’t get the ball past Brook who was by far the best player on the park as Westies secured their 1st away win in the league since 2013.
West coach Chris Groom “I thought defensively we were excellent. We didn’t park the bus and we looked to counter. Brooksey was really strong today”
Fulham’s coach John Christopoulos was philosophical after the game “Look we had plenty of chances but we didn’t take them. They scored a really freakish goal and sometimes that’s the way it goes, Congratulations to them.”

ELIZABETH GROVE ( 1 ) ELIZABETH VALE ( 2 )
A Daniel Nicholls goal 20 minutes from time has seen Elizabeth Vale triumph 2-1 over local rival Elizabeth Grove at Dauntsey Road.
Elizabeth Grove came into the game looking for a fourth consecutive win in the league while the Vale were looking for their first points on the road after losing two out of two on their travels.
The Peckers had the best of the early chances but a combination of some good keeping from Vale keeper Steven Doolan and some squandered opportunities kept the score at 0-0.
Against the run of play the Vale took the lead on 26 minutes when a penalty was awarded due to a foul by the Grove keeper Andrew Rowe which was duly converted by Steve Orange.
The Peckers grabbed an equalizer just before the break through a penalty of their own when Lindsay Cooper was fouled and when he converted the teams went to the break at 1-1.
The Grove continued to create chances but failed to make them count and they were made to pay when the experienced Daniel Nicholls headed home at the back post to give the Vale a vital three points.
Grove coach Shane Golder “Definitely a missed opportunity for us. If the game was won on chances created then you win but we all know that’s not the case so credit to the Vale.”

INGLE FARM ( 4 ) SOUTHERN KNIGHTS ( 0 )
TWO goals in each half has seen top of the table Ingle Farm run out comfortable 4-0 winners over the bottom placed Southern Knights at Walkleys Park.
Farm were keen to return to winning ways after a surprise 1-1 draw at home with Fulham in round four while Knights were looking for some much needed points having managed just the one so far this season.
In a physical affair Farm struck on 20 minutes with prolific Musti Ipekdal getting on the end of a Liam Mulvaney cross to tuck away the opener.
The lead was doubled on 40 minutes when a ball over the top found Ben White who finished clinically to the delight of the Farm faithful.
When Ipekdal scored his 2nd on 70 minutes the game was all but over and Ipekdal converted a penalty late in the game to secure his hat trick and a 4-0 win.
Farm coach Paul Simpson “It was a hard fought game and one we are happy to take the points from”.
Knights chairman Nick Swann “I thought we played some good football. It was a good physical game and we will keep our heads up and look forward to a home game next week.”

PARAFIELD GARDENS ( 2 ) WEST BEACH ( 1 )
PARAFIELD Gardens needed a 90th minute penalty to shake a valiant West Beach and run out 2-1 winners at Bradman Oval.
Gardens entered the game as strong favourites against a West Beach team who conceded eight goals against Elizabeth Downs in round four.
While Gardens dominated possession in the opening half hour they didn’t create a host of chances and on the half hour they were rocked when the visiting Beach hit the lead.
Beach won the ball in defence and a lovely through ball picked out Ally Edwards who lobbed the out coming Gardens keeper Anthony Stam to make it 1-0 at the break.
Gardens lifted after the break and were level on 50 minutes when a Shane Pearce cross picked out the ever dangerous Angelo Arambatzis who headed the ball home.
Both sides pushed for a winner and Edwards nearly had a 2nd when he made good contact with an overhead scissor kick which Stam parried onto the bar.
Just as it appeared the points would be shared a Gardens strike was blocked on the line and a penalty awarded which Pearce duly put away to the delight of the home fans.
West Beach coach Colin Alagich “It hurts to lose but at least we know we can match it with the big boys, we will take some real positives from today.”

Trimmer's equalizing goal alone was worth making the trip to the Downs to watch the game. Well done to both teams on a highly entertaining match.

Just out of curiosity, anyone that was there explain what happened here?

Against the run of play the Vale took the lead on 26 minutes when a penalty was awarded due to a foul by the Grove keeper Andrew Rowe which was duly converted by Steve Orange.

If Rowe made the foul and gave the penalty away what was it for and is there a reason he wasn't sent off? Just asking as its either "common sense" by the referee or a mistake.

The foul was for a raised elbow, received a yellow.

Just like to thank the grove lads, I was stretched off at halftime and recieved a few texts from some of their players to see how I was.

Lot of respect for the boys up the road, see you in the return leg (fingers crossed lol) 8)
