Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
We won the Cup in front of a full house that sold out in a couple of days, weeks in advance, in a season where we broke (smashed is more accurate) the attendance record for a football match in this state, with a record average match attendance for a football team in this state, playing the best football (imo) that any club side in this state has ever played, and we're sitting third in the league, the players are rock solid together, the coach is universally loved (one notable exception), the club's owners have shut up except for giving the players a good bonus ... all is going so well that the only thing the haters can say is that it should be better ... better players, better crowd.

School holidays and also annual leave for many...and straight after a successful test...and the awareness brought about by Phil Hughes death and ensuing heartfelt PR.

Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
Cricket receives much larger exposure; in particular given the large scale media coverage due to recent events.
Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
why do we have to compare the two? Would you be happy as a cricket administrator knowing that you have 100 years of momentum behind you and every conceivable advantage in the market place given to them by government, media et al...and you get 27k???BeNatural wrote:27,000 tonight in the BBL.
United still averaging 12,000for an 11 year club.
When will the crowd growth for AUFC commence?
Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
When AU only play 4 games a year?BeNatural wrote:27,000 tonight in the BBL.

Really stupid comparison - how many do they average for Sheffield Shield?
Are you Bodo in disguise?

Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
sheffield cricket is what we should be comparing crowds with , and i think they got 76 people to the last game

Well if AU played four games at the AU played at four games and we had some of the best players in the world playing imagine what the crowds would have been?

Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
Why do people need to compare, what does that gain.
All sports can live together. One could say why was AO half empty?

Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
Hopefully at the end of the season AU make finals and presumably the matches will be played at AO so there actually is a decent chance that AU will play 4 games at AO this season if you include the Malaga match. So as it stands this season AU's AO average crowd is 28k.ozzie owl wrote:You cannot compare.BeNatural wrote:27,000 tonight in the BBL.

Ernie Merrick: Of course I am happy when my team scores a goal, it's just that sometimes I forget to tell my face. (On why Ernie doesn't smile on the sideline.)
Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
Cricket is wilting away. Hardly anyone plays cricket anymore.
Even in India, football has become more popular than cricket.
Could not care less what they get for their BBL. Cricket is not a front line competitor - football has gone past cricket. Now its really only a battle between AFL, Rugby and Football.

Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
Sven, you almost sounded convincing - bit alas your post is bollox.
As stated there is no need for competition. Why do you need to go on the attack for football against other sports?
But football is miles behind cricket and hockey in India.
I read a detailed article on this a few weeks ago, I will post the source with the facts when I find it again.

Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
Here is the definitive answer:
Ebay Australia:
- search cricket items = 45,286
- search football items (excluding AFL) = 290,376
- search soccer items= 135,733
Google:
- search cricket = 295m
- search football (excluding AFL) = 1.33bn
- search soccer = 770m
- search australian cricket = 87.9m
- search australian football (excluding AFL) = 159m
- search australian soccer = 102m
Just proves that Australian cricket is less popular than Australian football. Media can talk up cricket as much as they like. Google tells the real story.

Cricket is the sport of the upper classes in India. Football is the sport of the rank and file in India of which many cannot afford to play organised sport.
Get on a plane, go to India and see what sport the kids are playing in the streets and I can tell you it is not cricket.

Re: A-League vs Big Bash Cricket
Last week I went to Hindmarsh and Adelaide Oval. In one sport I watched one of the world experts in his field, in the other I watched a guy who was shit at Millwall.
in one sport I watched 2 hours with a great atmosphere and some good banter and my son got his hero's autograph, the other saw a crowd who appeared to be asleep for the first 60 minutes.
In one sport I managed to walk up to the bar and got a beer very quickly, in the other I stood in a queue for 20 minutes.
I will always prefer football to cricket, and test matches to T20 but which game was more enjoyable last week? Answer was not even a close decision.
