The players on the park didn't have anything to do with the abdonment (other than their captain getting booked for diving, which wound up their supporters) so I don't think it was a deliberate tactic.

It's ridiculous though to replay the game nearly 2 months after the event.

If the game is replayed then the ref has a lot to answer for and should get the appropriate punishment. The only reason the game would be replayed would be if the league found that he had grossly mishandled the situation.
