Being an old fart, what the hell is MP4 and how do I access it?

Can I just download this to my computer hard drive and watch it or do i need some special software?

I haven't even figured out MP3 yet!

Technology is moving too fast for us oldies to keep up with anymore, it took me ages just to figure out how to use this forum.
