Re: greece through to the next round
Why would I have sour grapes? The decision has no bearing on my country's poor performance.

You will find the representatives of the following leagues, Serie A, La Liga, A league, J league, k League and the overrated EPL at the following location's departure lounge:

Re: greece through to the next round
i guess from now on when a player is taking a shot, the opposition should just stand clearJuventino wrote:Samaras goes to shoot, the defender blocks his downswing by putting his leg in the way (nowhere near the ball), causing Samaras to stumble. He hasn't just randomly clipped his own leg, the reason is because of the defender.
as someone said, who cares, penalty was given, but to claim that it actually was a penalty

The defender was nowhere near the ball and impeded Samaras' shot.El Paso del Norte wrote:i guess from now on when a player is taking a shot, the opposition should just stand clearJuventino wrote:Samaras goes to shoot, the defender blocks his downswing by putting his leg in the way (nowhere near the ball), causing Samaras to stumble. Spoke to 2 qualified refs on this one and both said, no penalty. Both felt it was on first viewing though.

Not sugar coating anything, that was a pretty easy group.
Japan were crap and Ivory Coast like most African nations crack under pressure.
If I was Cro i'd be saving the Rubles for 2018, think that'd be a good one to travel to with the squad you might have.

Re: greece through to the next round
Penalty 100%. Whether the referee saw this contact, or his call was based on Samaras' reaction is a different story. Didn't see it in real time so can't comment, remembering though that the refs don't have slow motion multiple camera angles.
Regardless the correct decision was made. Samaras was first to the ball and was trying to play the ball, shooting at goal no less. The Nigeria player was second to the ball from behind his left shoulder and impeded his shooting leg, intentional or not it was clumsy and has all the hallmarks of a free-kick, it was in the box, so penalty, end of story.
Had the Nigeria player got to the ball first or even at the smae time and Samaras came in to shoot and kicked the defenders leg, fell over as a result, then it's a different story.

Was very impressed with Colombia, playing on their own South American Continent, buoyed with huge travelling support.
Ivory Coast were no mugs, with big names in the Toure brothers & Drogba.
Japan had a real go against Greece who were down to 10 men for nearly an hour & had to stand firm and defend with spirit-of-2004 grit.
I was most impressed with Jose Cholebas, Giorgios Karagounis of course, Samaras' work-rate and Andreas Samaris' speed.
I think this team could surprise Costa Rica at 5.30am Monday 30th June (Adelaide time).

Meant it was easy in the sense that the other 2 teams battling for 2nd were average. As per FIFA rankings it was one of the hardest.
Colombia were brilliant and for mine have been the best team at this tournament. Every WC there's a smokey semi-finalist, this year think it will be them.
Japan yeh they had a go but this is really the weakest Japanese team I've seen in the last few World Cups. Even then the chances they created against 10man Greece were of poor quality. I was very confident of keeping a clean sheet in that game.
And Ivory Coast, like most African nations have brilliant players but no unity at national team level which looks to be a common trait for many of the West African former French colonies. Their star quality factor should be discounted on that basis.
