Serie A - Can it be the best league in the World once again?

Post by Piola »

Will Serie A be once again considered the World's best league? Is it possible? How long will it take? What off-field improvements need to be made and does the playing style need to change?

I think for Serie A to become the best league in the World once again they need to take a look at the English game and how its marketed in countries like Australia.

- Stadia need to be fixed to make them look better

- TV rights should be sold as a package by giving a maximum of two channels the right to broadcast matches and improve the quality of presentation.

- Have a healthy comp with about 4 title contenders each season (not impossible when you consider that you could have Juve, Inter, Milan, Roma, Lazio, Napoli all in the mix with strong mid-table sides like Sampdoria, Udinese and Palermo challenging for spots in Europe

- This perception that Italian sides play boring football and dive etc, needs to be overcome

- Crowd violence must be reduced considerably

- A couple of Italian winners in the UEFA champions league could help too.

Italian football is the best in the world, people just can't accept it. The most beautiful football is being played italy from Serie A to C2.

This notion of boring and defensive - yes thats why last season Serie A score 40+ more goals that the EPL, and 60+ more than the spanish league.

Take a look at how current day italian football is played - forward moving, flowing football. Not like the Spanish - slow moving high possession don't take risk football. Then the english - possession in defence then boot the ball forward.
In italy possession is played all over the park, but constantly moving forward. Italians attack with lots of men forward, with a system of overlaps and cutting into play. Opportunity is always taken, if theres a chance of a goal they'll take it. Italians are also very comfortable off the ball as well, which is a very important fact.

TV rights - fark the small clubs majorly, i've said it enough times. I don't care about coverage, but what the small clubs recieve for TV rights is fark all, but it does enough to stop people attending the games. Because in italy there is no collective rights, clubs seek out individual contracts. This means the big clubs batle out for massive contracts yet the small clubs get th scraps and given a choice of a little bit of money or fark all.

Stadiums - I love the italian stadiums, i love Ascoli's stadium, i love the curva, the terraces, the atmosphere it produces. They may be old but they are a great symbol of italian football.

Crowd violence - its actually come down a bit in the last few years (Serie A), just the sh1t that happens outside the stadium is bad.

I love italian football as well but if you ask people (non-italians) what the best league is 9 out of 10 will say EPL or La liga.
I don't think that italian football is boring either but I always find myself in debates with EPL fans who think Italian sides pass the ball around at the back for 90 minutes and play for 0-0 draws.

I like the stadiums as well but it would look a lot better if some weren't half empty.

Crowd violence is more serious in Eastern Europe but the media always focuses on the violence in Italy for some reason. People have died at Russian, Ukrainian and polish matches as well.

italian league used to be my favourite, i still think that the best players in the world are playing in italy and spain, EPL is good but never do the absolute best go there, players like ronaldo, zidane, ronaldinho, figo and many others never played in england and never will, it may good to watch the EPL but the absolute best are not attracted to it

How can you say the Italian league is boring? I personally rate the Italian League ahead of the La Liga and EPL. IMO the standard of play in the Italian league is better and look at this season. Look at how many teams are vying for 4th position. Palermo,Empoli and AC Milan. I watched a few games of LA Liga and the best game was MAdrid vs Barca. It was fast paced and there were plenty of goals.

My Viey
1. Italian League
2. LA Liga
3. EPL

the only reason its hyped is cause its a british league and we are a british colony

whenever something good happens in the english or scottish league its everywhere on the news here

if its any other country, it doesnt count :?

Thats is why the perspective of the EPL is inflated in this land. Is a great league, but in my veiw, not as good as the Spanish.

It depends i guess on which part of the game you love the best. If you want to see the "BEAUTIFUL" part of the game then the Italian League is by far the best. If you wish to see what the True Blue Aussies love which is the "QUICK, END2END" part of the game then the EPL by far is the best. If you want to see a bit of both, then i guess the La Liga but Spanish Football doesnt do it for me personally. The thing England has going for it is that they have these small Stadiums still like Hindmarsh where 30-35 thousand people are right on top of the action and the atmosphere is brilliant, you can hear the singing on TV quiet easily whereas in Italy and Spain they still have too many big stadiums where they fit 80 thousand but only 40K go if you get what i mean.
Also the TV Broadcaster for the EPL has got perfected the broadcasting perfectly where ESPN can easily BORE you with their picture and commentary and i think that doesnt help the situation.

Only my opinion :D

Serie A isn't even the best league in Italy. I'm sure Juve and Napoli fans agree with me ;)

epl can be more entertaining with long balls and agressive playing style, not to mention regular upsets, but the serie a is more tactical and to score is alot harder.

well, at the end of the day, i personally feel you have to be a much better player to be able to adapt to the SerieA than anywhere else, hence why most English players can't play there...you have to be more of an all round talent...in the EPL you can just run and run and it doesnt look quite as out of place as SerieA....

people who complain about the Italians and their antics and violence, shut your mouths immediately!!!

look at the English fans during the week in the UCL and UEFA Cup, its not only italians of the notable footballing powers who are in trouble with crowds and violence, the english are notorious fighters and trouble causers over the years...

If you want to see tactical football mixed with technical players who are quite attacking, backed with strong defenses (as opposed to defensive football, which is quite different), then watch the Serie A. It gives the best of everything, as opposed to the other two big leagues, which doesn't posses all these qualities. But it is easy to see that off the field there are problems and these must be worked on.

I personally believe there is no doubt the Italian Serie A (will you people learn to spell it properly?!?) is the most technical, competent and difficult.

Italy is still light years ahead as far as 'general technique and tactics' to much of the rest of Europe.

But the EPL markets itself brilliantly, the stadiums are packed and brimming with singing crowds whereas Italian stadia are crappy at best, falling to pieces and full of crims who can do their happy drug dealing etc. on the terraces.

The pitches in the EPL are beautiful, in Serie A they are ugly to say the least.

The TV production in Italy is very bad, TV camera angles are ugly and distant, the direction is incompetent and the commentary is lofty and incompetent....we are one of the few contries where all our Football journalists can hardly kick a ball.

As far as football is concerned, light years, my friends, light years before the rest of Europe learn what we do with team attacking and movement off the ball.

In Italy we have the Anti-Riot police who attacks the fans in the stadium, in England there are paying customers.

The only problem is that in Italy the crisis is organic and we treat our great things and people like scum (we could start with Dante and take it from there)...

the fact Eto'o would not play in Italy is telling, racism is uncontrollable in most of the country, the only black people we like are the ones that live on the streets so we don't have to feel threatened about our jobs.

Still, if we dressed it up nicely and televised it properly, all world fans would reconsider. It's all in the wrapping.

Happy Easter to All Forumites, even the ones full of anger and teenage angst and with little or no idea about the game.
