Thats Roma's main problem central of defence - it should be known now that i'm very critical of Mexes and Chivu, who IMO would struggle at a mid-table club. If Roma are to lose, bet your bottom dollar it will be a mistake from one of these two, cause it always has been.juventino_4_ever wrote:Spaletti a joke?? Um..yeh..whatever you say![]()
Roma were punished for a bit of slack defending and it may well cost them the tie. But credit to them to recover from that so quickly.
Reported trouble between police and Man Utd fans in the ground.
Roma played good football, probably played better football when it was 11 vs 11, awesome to see. To see the top english side be totally outplayed by an italian club low on form is always good to see. But as usual with Roma, they farked it up.
I love watching games like this, where the english teams possession always is in their own half (even when 11 v 11) and the italian teams main possession is in the opposition half (even when 11 v 11) - yet italian teams are still branded defensive

IMO Man U will get through, but Roma to play the better football.
As for the fans - didn't hear much from the ManU faithful, but the travelling english always seem to find trouble. Although Roma's are probably the roughest in Italy without a doubt (bunch of criminals), so i'm sure many of them would of been looking for a fight as well.
It was De Rossi 'marking' Rooney not one of the two central defenders
From another forum regarding the violence in the ground (some English journalist, so take from it what you will) -

There was a journo or something on who is in the ground, in the Utd end, on the phone to Five Live just now.
To summarise what he said:
- Incidents BEFORE the game, Utd fans being attacked/ambushed etc
- Started kicking off after sending off
- Missiles (most of which were bottles) exchanged by both sets of fans
- When Roma scored, the Roma fans charged a perpex screen seperating the two sets of fans
- Police ran down to try and stop the screen breaking so the fans can reach each other. To do so, they forced their way through Utd fans, knocking a bunch out the way
- Utd fans got angry
- The police reacted
- Police vs Utd fans. Round 1. Fight.

They would prefer Taddei on the right but no Perrotta, so Taddei should be the player puting preasure on ManU players high up.
Or Totti AM and Taddei right with Tavano or Vucinic forward.
I could even see Virga play AM and Teddei back out.

When Roma played Fiorentina, Pizzaro's distribution was horrible - couldn't hit a pass all game. But normally he has a good range of passing, so I don't know what to expect.aussie_ascoli wrote:Pizzaro will be the imporant man as he'll the "pirlo" of Roma, sitting infront of De rossi. If he plays well Roma should be alright, however i'm sure ManU will score in England.juventino_4_ever wrote:That's looks a safe lineup and probably what Roma will do.
Just hearing a rumour perhaps Vucinic wil get a start.

What i've highlighted is a worrying issue, cause you can't exactly stop tourists can you??? Yet i'm sure the estimated 1000, are not in italy for a friendly visit as well.British fans clash with Rome police
04/04/07
British football fans have been caught up in violent clashes with Italian police at Manchester United's Champions League tie with AS Roma.
A column of riot police with shields and batons were seen moving into a section of the crowd where two St George flags were on display.
It was initially unclear how the clash broke out but it followed earlier reports that five people, including three United fans, had been injured on their way to the Olympic stadium in Rome.
BBC Five Live commentator Alan Green, who witnessed the trouble, said: "United fans appeared to charge the police and the police went in. It got pretty vicious. I don't know if the Roma fans started this but they are happy now as it is between the police and the United fans."
Earlier Italy's ANSA news agency said that around 300 English fans were involved in a stand-off before the first leg quarter final tie.
On Tuesday United warned the 6,000 fans travelling to the game to take care. A message posted on the club's website told supporters to avoid certain areas of the city and not to use the city's metro because of a "real danger of being attacked by the 'Ultra' fans of AS Roma".
The warning infuriated some officials in the city, who said it would only excite tensions.
Around 5,000 United fans had bought tickets for the game but a further 1,000 were expected to travel without tickets.
The warning spoke of dangers on the Ponte Nenni bridge, the Campo de Fiori or trains to the Piazza Flaminio. Wednesday night's earlier incidents were said to have taken place near the Ponte Milvio and Ponte Duca d'Aosta bridges.
The trouble inside the stadium erupted after Roma went 1-0 up, with both sets of fans throwing missiles at each other. Police moved in using their batons on United supporters. TV pictures showed one dazed fan with blood pouring from his face with others trying to help him back to his feet. Meanwhile, announcements were made over the public address system threatening to halt the game. On the pitch Paul Scholes was sent off just 33 minutes into the match.

Player ratings
AS ROMA
Alexander Doni (6): Another solid performance from a Brazilian famed for anything but back in his native land, although he was helpless in Rooney’s goal. His main shortcoming was his somewhat differently-accurate timing as he came out badly for crosses, corners and free kicks.
Marco Cassetti (5): Rooney ran rings around Cassetti, but the Italian back did better facing Ryan Giggs, surgical interceptions before the break fading out in the second half as the player looked tired.
Cristian Chivu (7): He’s a perfect foil for the rather carefree Mexes, the Romanian’s tactical awareness holding the Roma rearguard together. His sober control of the defense is bound to stir up yet more transfer interest with the silly season on its way.
Philippe Mexes (5): Although his only attempt to ape the goal against Milan went astray in the first minute, the Frenchman was great in the air but could be accused of being a little too eager to join in a forward move at the expense of tactical rigour.
Christian Panucci (5): A characteristic performance from the experienced wing-back, showing his habitual pace and drive to the baseline, but failing to really make an incisive difference to flanking attacks and a little too slow in Rooney’s goal
Daniele De Rossi (5): A good all-round performance without much sparkle from the holding midfielder, protecting the rearguard from Mexes’ moves out of position, although perhaps sinning in his tendency to wallop in a long shot rather than pass to a team-mate.
Alessandro Mancini (7): He ran rings around a dazzled John O’Shea and showed his dribbling skills to good effect. The assists in the goals were the cherry on top of a decisive performance from the man who always seems to dribble a seleção call-up.
Simone Perrotta (6): An attacking bent marked his presence in the Giallorossi midfield, although a rather avoidable yellow card means that Perotta will be out of the second leg at Old Trafford along with Scholes.
Rodrigo Taddei (6): His best moment came with the first goal of the night, despite Wes Brown’s inadvertent help in throwing Van de Sar the wrong way, and he looked dangerous in support of Totti, although could have tried a few more attempts on target given his luck tonight.
Christian Wilhelmsson (5): He was Spalletti’s surprise package in a 4-1-4-1 that saw De Rossi left alone in defensive midfield with the number 4 giving more pace on the wing. The Swede mixed good runs forward with other times where he didn’t seem to know how to dovetail with his team-mates.
Francesco Totti (7): Alex Ferguson was left with a little to remember the Giallorossi captain by, although there was no thumb-sucking at the OlÃmpico. Despite the lack of a goal, Totti’s mobility made marking him a nightmare for the guests and he combined well with Mancini in the first goal.
Mirko Vucinic (7): Gained the aura of 'supersub' by coming on and pouncing on Van der Saar’s half-save to score Roma’s second. He was on the verge of netting a brace, but the Montenegrin has to be pleased with a memorable entrance and lasting effect on the result.
MANCHESTER UNITED
Edwin Van der Saar (6): The lanky Dutchman marked his presence with a couple of timely – yet hardly spectacular interventions – plus a hand in setting up United’s goal, but his sub-par parry directly led to Roma’s second goal. If he’d have decided to cede a corner by pushing it over the Red Devils could be prouder of a 1-1 final score.
Wes Brown (6): Covering for the injured Nemanja Vidic, Brown was up to the task of stemming the Roman tide of attacks and made Vidic’s absence less crucial to the final score.
Rio Ferdinand (5): Another typical performance from the man who always seems to flirt with greatness but be chained down by basic errors. Brown looked more solid as Rio held onto the ball and was guilty of a few crude tackles.
Gabriel Heinze (6): His first half performance was of a high calibre, although the second half saw that the Argentine needs to work on his fitness or spread his efforts out more evenly as the first half seemed to exhaust him.
John O'Shea (4): Although he was played out of his habitual position, the Red Devil’s life was made hell by Mancini’s stopovers and lightning dribbles. Perhaps a rating that owes more to Ferguson’s fielding of the player than the player’s innate capabilities.
Michael Carrick (6): He was in the thick of the action against a Roman midfield that often pitted five players in close proximity to the Man U man. His passes to Rooney and Ronaldo were as efficient as his general performance: solid, not shiny.
Ryan Giggs (5): A sub-par performance from the usually inspired and inspiring Welshman and rather disappointing that he didn’t shoulder more of the attacking burden given his seniority in the Manchester squad. Still – can’t win ‘em all.
Cristiano Ronaldo (7): A good all-round showing by the coveted number 7, although nothing to win any headlines – except his lack of the diving that all and sundry predicted he would resort to. He showed ambition and drive in his runs forward from start to finish but lacked that critical spark.
Paul Scholes (3): Although it would be going too far to say that he’s got a budding career in butchery after he retires from football, Scholes’ tackling was crude and called forth two yellows that changed the face of the match. His absence in the return leg will be a real headache for the Scottish tactician.
Ole Gunnar Soljskaer (6): Soljskaer played well in Italy, although clearly not with the killer instinct of old, although he did supply Wayne Rooney with the equaliser on a silver platter.
Wayne Rooney (7): Excellent work from a man who’s failed to shine much in Europe after his Fenerbahçe debut hat-trick left to a tall order to follow for the number 8. He was cool-headed in the face of any provocation, mucked in with the rest with defensive duties after the team were down to ten men and scored what could be a crucial away goal.
Darren Fletcher (6): Some quibble about Fergie’s choice when it came to the substitution, but the lad came out and did what was asked of him, which was top clog up Roma’s midfield arteries and avoid the damage worsening.
Louis Saha (4): Saha came on and failed to impress with a series of unnecessary fouls and nervy interventions. A poor showing from the man who is United’s top scorer in European competition this season.

it was a good result by roma to win 2-1! It was a silly conceded goal and roma should have scored a few more.....going down to 10 men roma should have punished man utd and made the tie all over. But i am happy we won and lets hope we go through!
It will be tough at OT but i reckon roma can do it, with pizarro coming back into the centre of midfield, and if Chivu and Mexes can play well then we will have no problem!

think those ratings were harsh on wilhelmson...i thought he was alright and did a lot of work before being subbed...he gets a 5 and the montenegran gets a 7 when he was only on for 20 mins...yes did score a goal but in truth it was bad defending...9/10 strikers woulda got that...including crouch. still evenly poised...sharpen your knifes mancs for the return leg

Good to see the mancs getting what they deserve!!!!juventino_4_ever wrote:http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1mnkk_crowd-fights

still Roma are garbage, Mexes and Chivu make me laugh, especially when ledesma and co. put three past them earlier in the season... ManUSA to get through will win 3 nil at home.
Liverpool ManUSA final!

flip of the coin job...hopefully we go through but you never know.maybe 2-0 for us at OT,ill take thatLFTWNG11 wrote:Good to see the mancs getting what they deserve!!!!juventino_4_ever wrote:http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1mnkk_crowd-fights![]()

Liverpool ManUSA final!

Firstly ill start off by sayin... Yes i am very happy with the result. If you look at the circumstances we have to be very confident about going through. The main thing for us tonight was to grab that away goal, and how crucial it can be. down to 10 men, 1 nil down, and roma dominating all game(except for those few mins afta we scored), we gotta be happy... in the end playin in italy, down 1 man, roma shoulda beated usby more then 1 goal easily. unlucky to concede the 1st goal with a deflection and needless to say VDS had it covered if the defenders missed it, but in football u need a break and roma got it. great 2 c rooney back with a nice finish.
Old trafford nxt week, no paul scholes will make it tuff, but italians havnt really played well at OT, we will b all out attack in this game. personally it was really gd 2 see saha and fletcher get a run, as the run-in for all comps is upon us and we need depth.
the lads can be proud of themself(not paul scholes disappointed in him) we can go back to Olt Trafford and finish the job there.

gonna be great to see those roman ppl get treated nicely
saw this, so so soooo true
Cristiano Ronaldo drew praise from Roma's veteran defender Christian Panucci.
As has been so often the case this season, the Portuguese wide man gave his marker somewhat of a run-around and Panucci was gracious enough to accept he had been in a real game in facing Ronaldo.
"If he takes off with the ball you will never catch him," conceded an impressed Panucci.
"You could compare him to motorcycling world champion Valentino Rossi.
"If I was given the same engine as him then perhaps I could catch him."

when roma scored they got stuck into the united fans, apparently there was a divider, and the cops were between us and the divider... so stupid, y wouldnt they b between roma fans and the divider, afta all we all know wat italian football is like, hence so many games being played behind closed doors... its shockin in any sport, makes me sick!
How do we know he didn't hit the cop first or something? the video doesn't reveal the whole story. Yes, it was over the top, but if you look, he initially walked away and then went straight back into the cop, perhaps in a show of defiance?
How do you know it was Roma fans who instigated it all? What has ben said is that missles were thrown by both sides to begin with.
Perhaps they were between the United fans and the glass because a smaller group may have been easier to get away than a bigger group if it was called upon?
Look at some of the facts (of which we don't know a lot of yet) before you start saying Italian cowards etc etc. yes it was over the top, but we don't know why.
