Ascoli Calcio 1898 Thread
I've held it off here for a very long time, but its time. Ascoli threads by aussie_ascoli have been seen in many forums over the past 5 years, but its time to start one in a forum of South Aussie's. Only Juventino 4 ever has witnessed my anti-abruzzese pro-ascoli rants first hand.
FORZA PICCHIO PER SEMPRE
ASCOLI CALCIO.
As this thread is named Ascoli Calcio comes from the small city of Ascoli Piceno in the province of Ascoli Piceno. The beautiful city is only 50 000 people big, the total fan base within the province would be estimated at 100 000, because of three teams within the province such as Fermana (Fermo) and Sambenedettese (San Benedetto Del Tronto). The success of the club, and how the city has gotten behind the club is incredible, due to its size, and was known as one of the best success stories in italian football.
The club was first inciated in 1898 named Candido Augusto Vecchi, however the team only played friendly matches against local teams. The team also had a name change in 1905 to Ascoli Vigor, then to Unione Sportiva Ascolana, but still only played weekly friendlies against local sides.
In 1926 Ascoli (US Ascolana), was admitted to the 3 division of Regionals, also in this year Ascoli built a new stadium. This first season was rewarded with a first place finish and promotion.
1938 was the big year were Ascoli was premoted to Serie C, Ascoli's first real achievement. Ascoli continued in C up until the war, and a few years after where another name change occured ASSOCIAZIONE SPORTIVA ASCOLI. However relegation meant another 11 seasons in the regional leagues. From this point on Ascoli have never looked back, although there had been money issues and so on , Ascoli's honourary president Cino Del Duca, gave 1 million lira to the club through his publishing work on a film. In respect of him, the club was named Del Duca Ascoli, and the newly built stadium named Cino e Lillo Del Duca.
This lead as a stepping stone to Ascoli most successful period. After Del Duca died a new visionary was president of the club, one of the most famous names in italian club football COSTANTINO ROZZI. Another name change was to come ASCOLI CALCIO 1898, and under the guidance of Carlo Mazzone, Ascoli won the Serie C championship in the 71/72 season.
The great president (owned a massive construction company) was able to lead Ascoli under Mazzone to a 4th place finish in Serie B, and the next season was one of the greatest landmarks in italian football. The city of 100 towers, 50 000 people, premoted to Serie A, after finishing 2nd in the 73/74 seasons. Two short campaigns had Ascoli back in Serie B for another two seasons until Mimmo Renna led Ascoli back to Serie A. This lead to a 7 year Serie A campaign with a 5th place finish and a 6th place finish. Mazzone led Ascoli to the 6th place finish 81/82 after returning for another 5 season stint with the club, while Fabbri was the manager who lead ascoli in the 5th place finish in 1979/80. Ascoli had one failure which saw them back in Serie B, however absolutly demolished Serie B and returned back to Serie A for another 4 seasons, and another one year stint in 91/92. That year that Ascoli demolished serie B was in 85/86, and currently holds the record for least amounts of losses in a Serie B season (or something else) which will probably be beaten by Juve this season.
Once Rozzi died the club went downhill and in 94/95 was relegated to Serie C1, where the club stayed for a stressfull 7 seasons. Then making a return to Serie B under the guidence of Pillon and captain Fontana. 2 mid-table finishes, was outdone by Giampaolo/Silva (team predicted to fight against relegation) who were able to achieve a 6th place finish (due to club financial situations and match fixing), ascoli returned to the greatest level, and achieved a remarkable season, similar to what was seen under Rozzi/Mazzone.
Stadio Cino e Lillo Del Duca
The home of Serie A football for Ascoli, was built in the early 60's and currently holds 24 000. Pre-regulations on stadium capacities one game against Juve, saw 36 000 people turn up (more than 50% of the city). The Ascoli Ultras group sits in the Curva Sud, and have built a massive reputation for their fanatical support.
Rozzi
The great man was not only remembered for his success as a President, which he saw 14 years of Ascoli in Serie A. But he was very outspoken especially to what he called the perscution of the small clubs. The man also often spoke in dilect. His death was such a painful time, and really symboled the end of Ascoli's "great" era. His death was moarned by the whole of italy, none so more than the Ascolani's, his funeral was attended by 20 000 people.
Mazzone
Born in Roma but has live most of his life in Ascoli Piceno, has spent over a decade at Ascoli, as a player and manager. There has been a quote where some years back, where managers going for their accreditation were told to watch Ascoli under Mazzone as they were just as beautiful as the Dutch's total football.
Success, Ascoli have spent 16 (4th place finish and 6th) seasons in Serie A, but they've also won a mitropa cup, and Serie C super cup, to go alongside 2 serie C championships and 2 Serie B championships. Also a runner up of the Anglo-italia cup.

My story
Ascoli have been my team since i was 5, i was forced to support the team by my father, while watching Ascoli's failed campaign in A on SBS. I didn't know any better so Ascoli was my team. The household was kept up with results through il globo, while in B and C1. Watching champions league i never really supported anyone, same in italy. Once the internet revolution occured, i became a passionate one eyed supporter, which at times has led to me failing some exams. i spend a couple of hours a day reading about Ascoli, listening to the supporters sing, the clubs songs, and re-watching games. The last 2 season in C1 and the 3 seasons in B, and the last year with current one, i know nearly every little detail about the club, successes, failures, players, chants and so on. Unlike many people my age my computer is not filled with porn but Ascoli chants and videos, over 7 gigs worth. But watching the games is always a great experience. My first full game i watched on RAI was Como-Ascoli in Serie B. And haven't missed a live game since on TV (only really showed a couple of serie B games but now in A, get to watch at least 7-8 on TV). Greatest experience was going to the game wearing my Ascoli shirt that cost me $220, and seeing Ascoli play Treviso in Serie A. Only a couple of seasons back i was discussing to my mates, how i would probably never see ascoli play in Serie A, How things change in football is incredible.
Supporting Ascoli is in the blood, my father born and bred there, use to go to the games in the late 50's, same with my zio, who was studing next door to the old stadium.
My Ascoli collection has extended to 2 fake shirts, 1 real one, 1 scarf, those flags things given to captains at the start of games, a home made flag, and a homemade shirt. +countless of videos of the games.
I know many people don't care about Ascoli, but for the true blue supporters FORZA PICCHIO

Ascoli have had some great players play for the club, that is a great effort for a small club.
A good read. Well done.

Should be burnt with a flare , i remember that day now, you made sure you found me in the morning and had to show me, that disturbed my day - all focused on studying then that happened - i blame that moment in time for affecting my grades from a B+ student to a C student.juventino_4_ever wrote:Yeh. Re: Ascoli Calcio 1898 Thread
lol that is almost not worth debating, hahaha, Maceratese can stay in Serie D. Its funny that even such a small club of Ascoli, it still doesn't get support from san benedetto, nor surrounding provinces. Anyways thats how i like it, cause Ascolani can defend themselves.MDR wrote:I have as well......on anohter forum...it may have been an Ascoli Calcio v Macerata debate.....aussie_ascoli wrote:Only Juventino 4 ever has witnessed my anti-abruzzese pro-ascoli rants first hand.

Maybe it will stop new threads being created after every channel4 headline is witnessed, lol. Its like a competition here, whoever see's the channel4 article straight away posts it. If we have individual threads many of those articles can go into the relevant clubs thread.INTERISTA wrote:u now realise uve started a precident for all fans to make their favourite club thread!!!!! ..yehh an inter thread not a bad idea..problery just get bagged 24 / 7

You feel more connected, its a feeling that cannot be explained. Knowing that the club represents anyone with the blood of your people is fantastic. Provincial football is the true heart of football, without these guys football would be nothing. We are the monks of football, devoted our lives to supporting a club who are likely to never lift a trophy, but battle our ways through Serie A, B, C, D, Eccelenza, etc, etc. We are deprived of pleasures of winning every game, and picking up the trophies. We are simply content to see our teams play, win, lose, or get relegated, we are always there. Even if we want our teams to be successful, we only demand the club to represent us, as best as possible.vigilante wrote:dio bon a provincial fanatic like rigoni, alabardiere and myself. good to see some of us supporting the town of our ancestors not just jumping on the 'sing when your winning' juventus bandwagon!
As an Ascolano - Rigoni, i want to kill him , however he must be respected because he's not plastic.

This ain't true for myself..I became a Juventus supporter during the time of Milan dominance, if I really wanted to be baandwagoner, I would have supported Milan!vigilante wrote:dio bon a provincial fanatic like rigoni, alabardiere and myself. good to see some of us supporting the town of our ancestors not just jumping on the 'sing when your winning' juventus bandwagon!
