Top scorer in the 1966 World Cup tournament, including a wonderful 4 goals for a 5-3 win in the quarter finals. His country was 0-3 down at one stage to North Korea in that game. (Earlier in the tournament those Koreans had beaten Italy 1-0).

Eusebio also scored a penalty for a 1-2 loss to England in the semi, after Bobby Charlton had given the hosts and eventual World Cup winners a 2-0 lead.

You are reading way too much into this Con. It's a reference to a comment made a while ago now by gmae, as you call him, and about half the forum got involved. Its not the first time its been regurgitated by other forumites. I don't see anything distasteful about previous comments, with the knowledge of the comment that is being referred to.

No, NT, I never reached those heights but I certainly saw him play a number of times and always admired him for his grace and power.

People I knew who played against him always remarked on his amazing ability to read the play like a Russian chess master reads his game - always watching and searching for an opening then strike with speed and accuracy.

Remember fondly when my older brother started playing football (aka soccer) in 1967, one of his first pair of boods were 'Eusebio' boots...not sure if they were the Puma king style boot.
I had those boots as hand me downs later....

take it from me, Eusebio could have easily coped physically with English conditions during his career but it was the lack of money available in the UK that would have prevented him from taking up any offer that could have been made to him.

Another reason would have been that the majority of British clubs were unwilling to sign foreign players in those times as the English FA still considered England as the pinnacle of world Football.( Pretty much how they still think actually)
