Agree, a legend rated by FIFA in the top 10 players ever.ozzie owl wrote:Legend of the game RIP.
Top scorer in the 1966 World Cup tournament, including a wonderful 4 goals for a 5-3 win in the quarter finals. His country was 0-3 down at one stage to North Korea in that game. (Earlier in the tournament those Koreans had beaten Italy 1-0).
Eusebio also scored a penalty for a 1-2 loss to England in the semi, after Bobby Charlton had given the hosts and eventual World Cup winners a 2-0 lead.

Re: Eusébio RIP
How would he have fared on a wet Tuesday night at Wigan?
"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. That's why I succeed." -Michael Jordan

Re: Eusébio RIP
Wigan were non league when he played, so probably not relevant
As for a cold wet Wednesday in Stoke.....

Re: Eusébio RIP
I thought people were taught not to speak ill (or sarcastically) of the dead.
The cliché about those dastardly foreigners not coping with British conditions is wearing thin.
Eusebio was muscular, athletic and fast, with an incredibly powerful blast of a shot.
He would have coped well against the local yokels of Wigan those days. Same goes for playing against any Stoke plodders.
I'll let O.F. respond to the other sarcasm in what is meant to be an RIP thread.
World tributes by the game's luminaries put the above cheap shots in context.

You are reading way too much into this Con. It's a reference to a comment made a while ago now by gmae, as you call him, and about half the forum got involved. Its not the first time its been regurgitated by other forumites. I don't see anything distasteful about previous comments, with the knowledge of the comment that is being referred to.Con M wrote:I thought people were taught not to speak ill (or sarcastically) of the dead.

No, NT, I never reached those heights but I certainly saw him play a number of times and always admired him for his grace and power.
People I knew who played against him always remarked on his amazing ability to read the play like a Russian chess master reads his game - always watching and searching for an opening then strike with speed and accuracy.

Re: Eusébio RIP
Following tributes pouring in from all over the World and 3 days of national mourning for Portugal's black panther, Portuguese teams will also pay further respect to the great man at the weekend's games.
IMO it was still inappropriate to make any comments that could be perceived as slurs about Eusebio on an RIP thread, no matter what distant relevance that had to past GMAE controversies.

If etiquette is to be applied to football news posting, maybe we should start with the categoric defamation, abuse and ridicule of people that are actually alive and able to read it, rather than innocuous, harmless comments which may be interpreted incorrectly.Con M wrote:Following tributes pouring in from all over the World and 3 days of national mourning for Portugal's black panther, Portuguese teams will also pay further respect to the great man at the weekend's games.

But I'm also asking admin to strip anything from RIP threads that could be perceived as even mild put-downs.

RIP
Remember fondly when my older brother started playing football (aka soccer) in 1967, one of his first pair of boods were 'Eusebio' boots...not sure if they were the Puma king style boot.
I had those boots as hand me downs later....

Re: Eusébio RIP
take it from me, Eusebio could have easily coped physically with English conditions during his career but it was the lack of money available in the UK that would have prevented him from taking up any offer that could have been made to him.
Another reason would have been that the majority of British clubs were unwilling to sign foreign players in those times as the English FA still considered England as the pinnacle of world Football.( Pretty much how they still think actually)

Good job you have nothing to do with the game anymore. Look up the word humour and the rejoin the forum.Con M wrote:That too, Blueblood.Blueblood wrote:If etiquette is to be applied to football news posting, maybe we should start with the categoric defamation, abuse and ridicule of people that are actually alive and able to read itCon M wrote:Following tributes pouring in from all over the World and 3 days of national mourning for Portugal's black panther, Portuguese teams will also pay further respect to the great man at the weekend's games.

Re: Eusébio RIP
Another forumite is confident too that the great man would have coped with English conditions.
Yet Tanner and the other forumite with the ironic pseudonym wanted to cast doubt on the great man after his death, on an RIP thread.
When challenged about that, they predictably went personal.

Look up the fucking joke and then admit you have made an ass of yourself. It's a common theme with you isn't it.

An all too familiar response from those who lack respect for anyone and anything outside their own little world.
Con M, our generation knows and supports the value of respect - unfortunately current generations have never been taught it.
