Manchester United's Champions League chances written off

Manchester United's Champions League chances written off - by new boss David Moyes
28 Sep 2013 22:31

"To win it, you have to have five or six world-class players. We’ve not got that" admits manager as West Brom win at Old Trafford.

Shak attack: Moyes' next European test in Shakhtar Donetsk away

David Moyes has urged Manchester United’s fans to keep the faith after a defeat to West Brom that saw a section of the Old Trafford faithful turn on the champions.

Moyes’ flops were jeered off after goals by Morgan Amalfitano and Saido Berahino had given the Baggies their first win on United soil in 35 years.

United’s third defeat in six games makes it their worst start to a season since 1989 - and leaves the Premier League champions slumped in mid-table, three points above the relegation zone.

But Moyes came out fighting.

Asked what message he wanted to send to the fans, he said: “Support your team and club. In football, there is no guarantee that you are going to win games.

“This is a great club and we have a great team - and the fans can be sure that we will do everything to put this right.

“I am concerned - but only because we aren’t playing well. There’s a lot of games left and it isn’t because of a lack of trying.

“It was a poor performance and a poor result. I can’t argue that West Brom were the better team and deserved their victory.

“After beating Liverpool in midweek, I wanted us to gain some momentum. But we lacked any spark. We had a lot of possession in the first half, but just didn’t create enough chances.”

Moyes and United head to Ukraine to take on Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League this week.

And Moyes has already warned that the squad he inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson might be the reigning champions of England - but aren’t good enough to conquer Europe.

Moyes said: “To win the Champions League you have to have five or six world-class players.

“If you look at Bayern Munich, they have five or six really world-class players, and to win it you might have to have that in your squad.

“Look at Barcelona, who had it in the past, and Real Madrid have maybe got it now.

“That’s the level you have to get at to win it. We’ve not got that yet. What we have got is experience and several players who are in that category or close to it.”

Baggies boss Steve Clarke was without eight players through injury, and then saw Scott Sinclair limp off to be replaced by Berahino after just 13 minutes at Old Trafford.

But Amalfitano put Albion ahead with a sensational solo effort after 54 minutes.

Although Wayne Rooney levelled with a fortuitous free-kick four minutes later, England Under-21 international Berahino won it for the Baggies with a spectacular winner in the 67th minute.

There were some grumblings of discontent among the home fans when he replaced Shinji Kagawa with teenager Adnan Januzaj at half-time after giving the Japanese midfielder a rare run-out.

Moyes added: “I thought Adnan did well when he came on – even if he was a bit nervous at first.

“We wanted Shinji to feel like he’s getting an opportunity to show what he can do.”

Moyes added: “West Brom deserved their win.

“They were well organised at the back and going forward they always carried a threat. What I’m looking for now is a response. We will sort it out.”

That should give their supporters encouragement.

I kind of see where he is coming from, but sounds like early excuses to me. Defeatist attitude......not something Mancs would be used too.

Media loved overhyped British manager, no winning history, defeatest attitude, conservative tactical approach, doesn't mind a facerub.

I think I've seen this somewhere before..... :P :P

I never once heard SAF say the other team "deserved to win". Moyes says it all the time (except at Liverpool)

If Moyes thinks that he doesn't have enough world class players in the squad then why did he spend most of the pre season chasing Fellaini?

While he is a good player he doesn't bring anything to Man U they didn't already have.

4 "World Class" players in my opinion. Sir Alex Ferguson had a habit of getting the best out of some very average players in his time as manager of United, that's what made him held in such high regard. Along with the signings of the likes of Ronaldo, Van Nistlerooy, Cantona and Schmeicel he ran very well with his youth acadamy producing the likes of:
Giggs, Beckham, Neville, Neville, Scholes, Butt, Brown, O'Shea, Fletcher, Gibson and more recently the likes of Cleverly. These guys along with some very interesting signings over the years with Sheringham, Cole, Yorke, Keane, Stam, Blanc, Solskjaer, Smith, Saha, Veron, Berbatov, Ferdinand, Forlan, Carrick, Nani, Young, Valencia.....

The difference was that when he signed a player he got them to play for the club and for him, no one he signed considered themselves to be above the club or management and when they did........ $$$

Vidic has lost a lot of his 'fear factor' to opponents of late and hasn't had a good game so far this season.

He's making far too many mistakes and putting pressure on the rest of the defence.

ManUre were carried to the title last season by the emotion associated with Giggs and Scholes and their much vaunted 'last fling' and some wonderful tactical work by Fergie in his final year.

I think one excuse that he does have is, RvP, Rooney and Fellani have been out injured for sometime. Take three certain starters (two of them you best attacking players) out of any line up and they will struggle.

But I don't like this "We need better players business" Fergie won the league with this crop last season so they must be ok!

One thing I have liked about Man U is that generally they don't go out and buy players at the top of their game. If there is a hole they will fill it, but generally they try and bring in younger players with potential and develop them. The fact Moyes has already spent over £50m and he's been there 2/3 of a season is not a good look.

They will definitely give him this year unless Fergie says so then next season the pressure is really on!

That's beneficial to him if anything.

Just remember that they all said the same thing about SAF until he finally won some silverware - after seven years wasn't it?

Manchester Utd’s Shinji Kagawa is playing football against samurais now. When you can't even maintain the necessary supply of socks, you knows things have truly gone wrong. Perhaps this will become a saying for maillot de foot clubs in turmoil. I can hear Man United manager David Moyes saying it now: "Well, at least we have socks."
