Lady reds
So how did the trials go yesterday, was anyone out there?
Any new talent? Can we expect an improved season from the last 5?
Some young talent has been introduced over the last couple of seasons (Checker, Waterhouse, Scalzi, Hodgson, Ianella etc) but I think they still need some older heads around them to help out.
Were the interstate triallists better than the ones from last year? Did Ruth Wallace, Donna Cockayne, MJ, Quigs, and the usual Lady Reds faces turn up?
Any news?

Re: Lady reds
RQ was trialing, Kristie Moore watching I guess shes already in, no Metro players there they were trying 2 win the league at cumby. Lots of interstaters but no-one stood out, our local NTC and CLUB players trialed well, lets hope Ross picks SA girls

Re: Lady reds
Three groups ran in succession, one group of local SA girls, the interstate and a mix of some premier league players and the NTC. The teams rotated with local girls playing both halves so that some of the girls could go and play their league games at 3pm.
not that scores matter in this but the first game was end to end attack some good saves by both keepers ( interstate keeper and local Prem's Keeper KB) :
Local v Interstate 0:0
Local v NTC 1:1
NTC v Interstate not sure ?
Some good passages of play and end to end attacks. Players didn't look as fit as perhaps they should, perhaps the strong wind ( which was blowing a Gail across the pitch) and warmer weather caught many by surprise. There were a few interstate girls who looked good and some of the local girls put some pressure on their opposite numbers. RQ played but looked sore or pulled up sore? not sure if she was ok, Scalzi was good, Innella was sitting up on the grand stand, MJ not there and not sure about the any others of note.

Yep shes been back 4 a while played on Friday against Sturt, but looked slow and unfit
Re: Lady reds
She would have been playing more at the end of the season, except her transfers went missing in transit. She missed 2 games that I'm aware of, not sure if there were any others!gunners01 wrote:Yep shes been back 4 a while played on Friday against Sturt, but looked slow and unfit
Re: Lady reds
sad to read taht things in the US probably didn't go as planned. She'll learn from it. Good luck to her in the Lady Reds. Any updates Bev?
Re: Lady reds
Everything worked out well in America, she made the midwest All star 1st team....
Stuff up with transfer meant she couldnt play for a couple of games
Carrying a groin injury at the moment and started a full time job tired her out a bit.....
So if anyone wants anything go see Racheal at Sportscentre on Port Rd Hindmarsh...

Sounds like Checker has gone to Victory, so that'll be a big loss for the Lady Reds. Really hard to say how much improvement there will be at this stage. Ross has a lot of work to do but I think he is capable of turning them into a competitive team.QuantoQuesta wrote:So how did the trials go yesterday, was anyone out there?

Re: Lady reds
I think the Reds will soon attract many of the "lost" players to the league. Senior and capable players that once were the cream of the SA scene may return. One here or there....maybe just to trials....maybe make the squad. Who knows. I have a good and positive vibe about this season.
Re: Lady reds
Quite agree Sad Gal, I think Checker would of stayed if she had known sooner Ross was new coach- but she already signed contract a pity ffsa were not alittle more organised

Westfield W-League Lady Reds Sign Moore & Stockdale
Football Federation SA is pleased to announce the signing of both Kristy Moore and Laura Stockdale for the Westfield W-League Lady Reds 2013/14 Season.
Both players, along with previously announced signing Melissa Barbieri, will bring a wealth of experience to a young Lady Reds side.
Moore who is originally from Adelaide played for SASI Pirates in the Women's National Soccer League before moving to England and joining Barnet. In season 2000-01 she scored 41 goals in 32 games for Barnet and won the Premier League Southern Division Player of the Year award. She was then signed by the professional club Fulham and won two consecutive FA Women's Cups and the Premier League National Division in 2002-03.
From 2003-2008 She played for IF Fløya in Tromsø followed by Stabæk in Bærum outside of Oslo, from 2009 onwards. Her new club finished second in the league in 2009 and won the league title in 2010 and the Cup competition in 2011 and 2012.
In December 2012 Moore decided to return to Australia after 15 years away. She left Norway as fifth on the all–time Toppserien goal scorer list. Joining Adelaide United last season as a guest player, Moore scored on her Australian W–League debut, a 2–0 home win over Newcastle Jets.
At the beginning of 2013 Moore moved to California to play for LA Strikers in the US Soccer Leagues W-league and is excited to play a full season for the Westfield W League Lady Reds.
“The squad is coming together well and looking like a strong side to take on the competition. I am excited to play under Ross Aloisi and see how the side can improve from previous seasons.
“I can’t wait to finally play back in my home town in front of my family and friends after all of my time away.”
Stockdale, originally from Sunderland in England attended the National Women’s Football Academy in the North East of England from 1999-2003.
From August 2003 - May 2006 she was a full football scholarship holder at the NAIA Division 1 Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky USA. Moore then spent August 2006 – May 2008 at the NCAA Division 2 Franklin Pierece University in New Hampshire USA on a full football scholarship while also spending the summer of 2007 and 2008 playing for the Adirondack Lynx in the Women’s Premier Soccer League in New York.
From September 2011-April 2013 Stockdale played in the British Universities National Premier League for the Durham Wildcats while also playing for the LA Strikers FC in the W-League in California between May 2012-July 2012.
Most recently Stockdale continued her time at the LA Strikers playing in the United Soccer League in California and is now looking forward to her first time in Australia.
“It is very exciting to be on a new continent, playing in a new league. Over the past couple of years I have played with a few Australian girls who have been a part of this league and I have heard great things about it.
“I am excited about playing with the Lady Reds. The experience they are bringing in to the club this season I believe is going to bring a new look to this team and I am grateful to be a part of it. I can’t wait for the season to get underway.”
The Westfield W-League season kicks off on the 9th of November with the first Lady Reds home game on Saturday 16 November against Melbourne Victory.

I haven't known her to be any different.
Re: Lady reds
Apart from FFSA's continual mismanagement and deplorable attitude, the Reds look to be on a good path. Ross is no one's fool and will want the best for his team and will not play second fiddle. High expctations.
Injured, unfit and players with poor attitude will be shown the door. Good I say.
I'm looking forward to this season. It'll be different.....Or Ross will walk

Football Federation SA is pleased to announce that Next Generation has partnered with the Westfield W-League Lady Reds for the 2013/14 Season.
Next Generation will provide two sessions per week for the squad with a personal trainer to work on injury prevention, strength and conditioning.
Lady Reds Head Coach Ross Aloisi said that the partnership has come at the ideal time for his squad.
“A fit and healthy team is imperative for the season ahead. These training sessions will play an important role in our schedule and provide players with a professional environment to develop their fitness regime.”
Next Generation General Manager Stephen Wishart said that the gym is looking forward to working with the squad.
“Next Generation is proud to be working in partnership with the FFSA and in particular the Lady Reds. The team will be using Next Generation facilities to vary their training regime and to increase their fitness levels.
“As a sponsor we look forward to supporting the team and wish them every success over the coming season.”

Thanks JT. Maybe not just yet. Still many holes in the whole process however me (along with my therapist) think it’s good to look at the positives for once as the negatives will surely arrive. Hope not
Still the delays in appointing coaches impacts on player selection etc. Which in turn affects performance. Don’t think the team has ever had the right lead up and foundation fitness to achieve what we know the players could have achieved. Let’s see where we go.
btw if quigs is not up to it then she needs to take time out. Get right. re-assess her goals and work during pre-season to get herself right for 2015. Playing a player out of sorts and with fitness issues is not going to happen. Will be better for her to pull out of the selection trials now than be cut.

Re: Lady reds
Sick of people blaming FFSA or Lady Reds coaches etc for players lack of fitness. The W league is 3 or 4 months long at most, what are the players doing for the other 8 months of the year? should they not have some pride in themselves and get fit in preparation for the league?
In the last two years when DE was running the NTC squad, they were the only fit players in the state and he should have played more of them! Quigs was usually only fit enough to be used as a sub and if the US has not changed that situation well it says more about her work ethic than anything.
If Ross has any sense he will just pick the NTC girls who seem the only ones serious about their football and willing to make the effort to be fit!
As for the older girls who are 'lost to the game' coming back.. Well a few games of reserve team football for Olympic is hardly the preparation they need for W League.
Oh and just for the record, every other state has the same problem of winter football running until about 6-8 weeks before W league and they don't seem to have fitness issues..? Kristy Moore is in her 30's has played in the same league as RQ over the winter in the US and. I can assure you she does not look 'slow and unfit'
It is time our girls started taking responsibility for their own fitness!
I really hope Ross sticks to his word and takes players skin fold measurements and gives them weight limits for playing, they need it!

Re: Lady reds
You may be sick of the blame game however, SASI never blamed anyone for a program they were managing and with the fitness and capabilities of the Sensations. Yes fitness and skills training is a yearlong process YES YES YES however if the FFSA are serious YES serious then the W-League needs to be a flippin year round program. Local league players don’t have the same level of fitness as a W-League player. That’s why the Sensations only ever had 90-95% SASI players.
So get your head out of the clouds and think laterally. Think reasonable and stop defending the indefensible. The FFSA run the Reds Show and they need a year long program to get players up to standard.
Come back with a better argument.
Sick of useless banter like this.

Ross has already said in interviews that if the players are not up to scratch they wont get in the squad so breathe easy people there will be no unfit players this year..
Re: Lady reds
Hi Retired
My comments were based on those directed at rach. No offence intended from my part towards her.
To say that players should be up to W League standard (or infer it) is absurd. If the FFSA yes the FFSA are SERIOUS about the W League (questionable) then this needs to be a year round program. You cannot continue to chop and change squads every year and expect consistency and quality. Its not fair on the players. The coaches. The fans and the integrity of the system. Why not keep the squad together and unlike sasi invite players to be a part of the squad. I said squad not team because the team gets selected when its due toi be selected. Until then it’s a squad.
Systems across Australia are not doing the right thing by our players. Not a generalised comment but one based on observations.

I totally agree with you SAD GAL the Adelaide United team should be a year long squad not a 2 hour trial on one sunday afternoon when its blowing a gale.

DE asked clubs to follow his fitness plans so players peaked in fitness when the W-League would start. Not sure how many clubs ended up implementing his plan.SAD GAL wrote:You may be sick of the blame game however, SASI never blamed anyone for a program they were managing and with the fitness and capabilities of the Sensations. So have to agree somewhat with the year-round program comment. Unfortunately there's no funding for that.

Re: Lady reds
Soa year round lady reds squad play in which competition and let's take the best 20 players out of the Premier League, as well as the best 20 younger players for NTC and we are left with what..?
FFSA are from my understanding required to administer and run the game of football as a whole. They have been left to run the Lady Reds because Utd can't be bothered/aren't interested.
Still no excuse for anyone who wants to play w league in the summer to be unfit! I remember DE saying they would be fitter in the second year and I actually think they were but still below the level of other clubs apart from a few (the internationals, interstate and Checker, Macri). If Ross is saying that he wnt pick unfit players, where is he going to get the players from? As I said earlier, only those girls in the NTC seem to actually be fit (Hodgson, Ianella, Klajcic etc.)
As for SASI... Well SASI was around in the first 3 or 4 seasons of W league when the lady reds managed to create the worst record of any australian sporting team.. Something like 3 full years without a win....

Who said they needed to be taken out of the premier league.....even training an extra 2 nights a week as well as their premier teams training would benefit more than what they are getting now..

Re: Lady reds
This discussion highlights an interesting dilemma facing older (over 18) elite players- that is that there is no place for them to play during the season within the premier competition which offers them what they need to be competitive wleague players. From a pure fitness standpoint, IMO, city and uni do the best job (excepting the U15's- they are FFSA and serve to illustrate my point) but two trainings/week isn''t enough and the competition isn't strong enough to give the players adequate Intensity to prepare them for wleague. Either clubs need to raise expectations and offer more intense and demanding programs with better quality coaching or the over 18 elite players trying to get to the next level need, like NTC, to be pulled out of the clubs and play together in a. u18 boys comp. or perhaps some sort of hybrid program where the girls play for their clubs on Sunday and midweek in a boy's comp.
Wleague match fitness not just about being able to run out a wleague game- it's about intensity, speed and decision making. These things only come with a more intense playing/training environment on a regular basis.

Re: Lady reds
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, and this serves to further support my earlier point, but didn't this poor wleague performance under burnett correspond with the lowering of the age group for SASI, and leaving those older Sasi players with no adequate place to train and stay fit for wleague? I think we lost a lot of age and experience then and the lady reds have been struggling ever since. Like it or not, the SASI program, when it catered to older players, did serve a purpose.QuantoQuesta wrote: As for SASI...
