Match Preview:

The 2013 Adelaide Airport Women's Cup will be played out between Metro United Women's Football Club and Adelaide City WFC on Sunday, September 8 at Coopers Stadium, Hindmarsh.

Both teams are coming off an undefeated record leading into the final and are no stranger to the big stage, having both been involved in previous cup finals.

Spectators can expect the rivalry between the two clubs to heat up during Sunday's match as both vie to earn back respect and redemption.

Metro United Women's Football Club came within a knife's edge of claiming the title last year, but lost to Adelaide University.

Coach Enzo Salzano told ffsa.com.au last year's loss had spurred on the team to prove they had what it takes to bring the cup home.

"Many hours of training, preparation and games has gone into making this final appearance, including a hard fought victory in the semi-final, over the reigning Cup holder," Salzano said.

"Fighting for the league at the same time has made the path to and preparation for the Cup even more challenging, but the rewards are significant if the players can clear the final hurdles.”

"No Cup final defeat is ever easy to stomach and last year saw Metro fight gallantly, but ultimately defeated to a deserved victor.”

"Those memories of final’s defeat, will hopefully provide added motivation to the playing group who have experienced the high’s and low’s over the years."

Salzano admitted the game would prove to be a battle, as Adelaide City were currently sitting top of the Premier League table.

"Adelaide City have no obvious weakness and a victory will require team unity, experience and also some individual flair to break open the deadlock," he said.

Meantime, Adelaide City will also be eager to secure a win and regain bragging rights over its arch rivals, after being knocked out of last year's final contention during the Cup semi finals by Metro.

Adelaide City coach Edoardo Rosso said the team thrived on the build-up, but was also careful not to change the routine.

"We have made many finals before, but it's always a pleasure to play at Hindmarsh," Rosso said.

"The team has worked really hard all year to be competitive in every game they've played.”

"We haven't done anything special to prepare and we know it's a big game and we also know they've been observing us for many months which is something we take as a compliment."

He said recent results could mean his side went into the game as the underdogs, but it was not a tag that worried him.

"We will need a great effort both individually and as a team to get the win and they will go in as the clear favourites, but in football you never know."

The senior final was an energy sapping game with the enormity of the pitch taking its toll on both teams. Adelaide city scored a deflected goal early in the second half then Metro clawed there way back into the game with a header from a corner.

Metro coach got the coaching honours and league/cup double by using all 4 substitutes to keep the team fresh and running. It is well documented that I was once an Eduardo fan but he has been out-strategized this year in the big games. Sunday he had 2 fresh players, one a first team regular and one promoted from reserves, that were left on the bench without a minute to influence the game when clearly the 26 degree day and huge pitch was taking its toll from midway into the second half. In the 92 minute Metro got around the back on the left side and slotted the winner.

Whilst the player I went to support played well, it was the honour of playing on Hindmarsh that she enjoyed and will cherish, she did feel very disappointed for those that never got a minute out there after a long season of effort.

That's senior football. Happens in all leagues around the world. Guus did it in one of Australia's most important games ever played.

As for the result, well 'that's football'.

I find it very unfair to put all the blame on the coach, and try to paint him in an unfavourable way. After all, the team got to Hindmarsh and they're currently top of the ladder with Metro hard on their tail.

Well done to both teams, players, coaches, managers and volunteers

One game left now, but looks like Adelaide City have won the league.

The cup final had to be one of the most boring games Adelaide city never looked like they were going 2 score- Metro all players looked unfit and just kicked the ball long not linking 2 passes together a huge dis appointment

At last an honest and true opinion of the final. I've been amazed at the comments in here about teams playing possession football and playing out from the back and the league being even and good quality etc. I actually started to wonder if I was seeing something totally different but this post reassures me I have been right all along.

The best player in the league is a 14 year old who is too young to play for the Lady Reds. I hope for all of our sakes the trial on Sunday unearths some interstate talent!

I think you mean "At last someone who finally agrees with me". You have an opinion & you're entitled to it. However I question your perception of reality & the need to be reassured that you are always right .... one comment in support of your thoughts is NOT the determinant of fact. Ever wonder why your opinion may be in the minority?
Don't fret too much about the "best player in the league", I'm sure that one day she will be old enough to play for the Lady Reds. Only time will tell if she actually does.

Must say its hard keeping up with some of the view points on this forum. The goal posts move a fair bit.

Metro keeper KH never played once from the back, lost possession every time she kicked it long-at least Adelaide City pass the ball and try to play football if not for the mistake by AC Keeper and Metro scoring they would of never survived extra time. Girls at the end of the season she be fit -All Metro players look unfit this is why they've caused so many bad tackles this season causing injuries to other players. :? :?

Fancy that. Metro actually scoring goals to stop the game going into extra time which would have guaranteed a city win apparently, after metro even scored an own goal.

As for theory that unfit players causing so many bad tackles and injuries, well this forum never ceases to amaze me.

The less that is said the better.
