Bit of a joke the way this whole thing was conducted.

Who tells a boy there in the squad 3 days beforehand, and then finds out when the squad is picked hes not in it.

The system of junior development squads need a major overhaul.

It seems to be run on an adhoc basis and doesn't seem at all to be professional.

eg U14 development squad is mainly the U13 squad from 2006 plus only 3 new players presumably picked from the 2006 zone tournament.

Obviously it is not a true reflection of the best available talent in the junior system.

BTW great win by the Birks Under 14's on the weekend....they are looking good.

wouldnt mind knowing myself. sounds like coaches had some communication issues.

the state squad selection is a bit silly. nd i say that even thought my brothers are in two of the squads!!! but u have to play the certain type of football to get in. they dont want they boys with all the fancy tricks they pick the ones who can pass and control the ball well

i would of thought so.

tricks only get you so far. passing and controlling are fundamentals which take you a long way.

seems o.k to me, i thought reasonable mix, surprised some didn't make and some others did, but i'm not the coach . if as bill shankly said happened would be dissapointing to those individuals, but as for complete overhaul !!!! i'd be surprised, as it is a lot better than it used to be. in saying that as the father of a keeper i'm still to see the face of excitement or dissapointment!!! we'll see soon...

it's all very secretive. The coaches should come out and tell the players and parents what they are looking for. The kids have got little time to display everything that they have, but if they knew what the focus was on then more would stand out. At the end of the day it depends on what each individual coach is looking for, so why not communicate it!
A bit of a lottery sometimes.

I've heard they have a squad of 30 outfield players and are now choosing the keepers. Possibility of squeezing in some more outfield players after they have picked the keepers.
But it could just be rumours.

One thing is for certain their is no such thing as an ideal way to pick these sort of squads, whatever process is used there will always be disgruntled parents/kids that miss out. I personally would not want to be involved in dealing with the odd angry parent who thinks his little Johny is the next Ronaldo.....

I would love to be dealing with parents that think their child is the next Ronaldo.

Here are a couple of pre-written statements, please feel free to use any/all of them:

1) Fuck you, your son is talentless, why don't you just face it and piss off?

2) Ah, sorry, I didn't realise his last coach was Hiddink and he loved him, why the fuck are you here then?

3) No, I don't want your fucking opinion, if I needed a second opinion I'd have an assistant, not you fucking pushy parent!

It has been a long process and it is unlikely you are going to agree 100% with the final choices, every body has their own opinions.

My understanding is Elvis is going around Sunday mornings to the games to scrutinize "fringe" players who tried out but didn't make it and to see if there was any talent who missed the process.

If he is trying to build the "best" squad, in his opinion, he is doing the extra legwork on the Sunday mornings to make sure.

Rumour has it Elvis has selected a few boys under age boy's they must be bloody good players or its pretty sad there isnt enough good players of age.

Yes I'm sure there is no pleasing every one but as long as Elvis can sit back at the end of it and say (yes i have picked the best of the best) in his oppinion, and lets face it he is the coach and has to work with these boys and represent our state when they go away.

Regarding numbers I've heard (second hand) that it was a matter of players were ranked and then the question was "where do you draw the line?" If there was 50 good enough then 50 would get in.

I think 9/10 times state gets it right in selecting the best players from the age group!! u r always goin to get maybe 4 or 5 debatable decisions!! U would be surprised at how many state coaches or so called spies for state coaches watch junior soccer!!
