Crucial clashes

Post by stonehenge »

Noticed that the top two women's premier league teams were playing each other for top spot today. The match wasn't too far from home so I popped along as a neutral. It was 'entertainment plus' from the first whistle though not just for the quality of the contest, which was hard fought throughout. It was clear from very early in the match that the away team had a rather loud, vocal group of supporters. A significant number of their comments were directed at the match referee, who did his best to maintain focus, constantly questioning his decisions. Interestingly, by the game's end, half of the home team's players had entered the referee's book and the 3 goals scored by the away team came from free kicks. Fascinating!!

Oh really Stonehenge! Are you really trying to make us believe that you are a neutral with these comments? Is the implication that City's supporters swayed the referee and that the awarding of the free kicks tilted the game City's way? Are you saying that the City supporters influenced the referee to book five Metro players? Look, I AM a neutral, even though I do have friends at City and Sturt-Marion. I was in the area and took my young niece to the game. It must be said that the referee was very poor and let a lot of pushing and shoving go unpunished. It was understandable that the City supporters were questioning the ref's decisions. Metro are renowned for their physical style and the bookings were well merited. At least the referee got that right. However, there was an incident in the first half when a City striker had broken clean through the defence and got felled just outside the area. I think that was a definite red card as she was denied a certain goal as the last player. The referee just ignored that it was a professional foul, just as he did on many other occasions when clear fouls had been committed. Anyway, both teams battled well with Metro really taking it up to City. A draw probably would have been a just result in the end, but by the same token, City deserve credit for withstanding Metro's physical style, trying to play good football on a terrible pitch, depth (two top players out injured) and for their goal scoring power. A worthy top of the table clash with excitement galore. Metro got the goal of the game with an absolute rocket of a shot but the other four goals were good too. Congratulations to both sides on a hotly contested match.

P.S I actually disagreed with City supporters who said that they fully deserved to win. I also disagreed with some Metro supporters who said that City were lucky to get a point let alone the three points.

As A Metro supporter I agree pretty much with UWS comments - a great game but naturally disappointed with the final result. A draw would have probably been the right result - credit to both teams for a cracking game!!!
