Lampard scoring feats hailed
Frank Lampard kept alive Chelsea's hopes of a third successive title with his 20th goal of the season.
The England midfielder scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 1-0 victory against struggling Manchester City.
Lampard sent goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson the wrong way in the 28th minute after Micah Richards had been punished for tripping Salomon Kalou.
It meant Chelsea moved to within six points of league leaders Manchester United with their sixth successive league victory.
Assistant manager Steve Clarke said: 'Frank's goal-scoring contribution is immense.
'To score 20 goals at this stage of the season for a midfielder is a marvellous achievement.
'We are all aware what a vital member of the squad he is.'
Chelsea now entertain Sheffield United on Saturday in confident mood.
Clarke said: 'It closes the gap to six points and that was the objective before the game. Now let's see what happens at the weekend.
'We are happy even if it is not always possible to get to the levels you want to achieve.
'Manchester City made it very difficult for us. They are fighting for their lives in the division and we knew it would be a tough game.
'They huffed and puffed but I do not think they had a shot on target.'
It was City's fifth straight league defeat but manager Stuart Pearce was heartened by the performance.
He had seen his side jeered by the fans at Ewood Park on Sunday when they went down to Blackburn in the FA Cup.
Pearce said: 'We came into this game after losing in the cup and sometimes it is harder to play in front of your own fans when things are not going well.
'People are also telling me this club is split down the middle but this display showed otherwise.
'I was pleased with the endeavour we showed.
'We are bitterly disappointed we lost the game and felt we should have got something out of it.
'We have got 10 matches to go and must make sure we take that endeavour into the weekend.'
