If I am fouled, the ball plays to my side's advantage and the ref plays advantage. Can my side choose to not take that advantage and receive the free kick instead?

No. It's up to the referee to make that decision. If he hasn't signaled play on or stopped play chances are maybe he didn't think it was a foul.

Does the next season start afresh or does he have to miss the first game ?

Yes, it carries over to next season (i.e Joey Barton)
If you change clubs, the SAASL probably won't pick it up, so you probably can play! (unless your first game is against your old club - they will know cos they would have got the fine)

Funny thing is in both cases the both former clubs claimed that the player was told of the carryover at the clubs's presentation night, but in at least one case the player wasn't even at presentation night.
Of course you can ring up the association and ask if a certain player is carrying a suspension over and be told 'no', but still end up forfeiting the game

I think saasl would pick up on it, you keep the same card number etc.. so no reason why it wouldn't be noticed.
