The lines-person is not a qualified official, they are doing the best that they can. No parent wants the responsibility to run the line, especially when they're there to watch their son or daughter play.
It's lucky that we get anyone to take on the responsibility; imagine if everyone said no.
Lines-person decisions fall into five categories -
- The majority of mistakes are just that - mistakes.
The correct decision was made but the on-lookers did not see it, or are in the wrong location/angle.
Line-person does not know the correct Laws of the Game.
Concentration dropped causing indecision, and automatically lifting flag.
Lastly; a very tiny minority will cheat.

As a parent, I will;
- put up nets and corner posts before the game
- take down nets and pack up after a game
- wear the Ground Supervisor vest
- assist with any other duties
But I will not run the line. Why? Even though I understand the rules, the intense level of scruitiny this role attracts and the potential levels of aggravation it can cause leads me to conclude I would rather not. I can do without the inevitable conflict and slanging that occurs and I see every other week. Sad but true.

Re: rd 4 results
Sad part is when you ask someone to take the flag, suddenly "they dont know the rules". Soon as someone else grabs it, "suddenly" they know the rules. Even more bemusing is if you ask a player (not playing that game) and he says the same thing. Unbelievable!

Re: rd 4 results
People make mistakes, often they're caught in the wrong position and aren't looking along the line. They're ball watching and then all of a sudden it goes forward and the player is in an offside position. They probably were onside when it was kicked, but you have to excuse the parents for watching the game. Most actually miss off sides too, and players score goals. It all evens itself out, getting worked up about it just creates an unnecessary, volatile atmosphere. Those very few that do 'cheat' get found out by the referee quick enough, and he soon stops obeying their flag. Enjoy the game, put up with some bad calls, because trust me, even when you get official linesman at senior level, they aint much better! haha.johnydep wrote:Why do we have to have this discussion all the time?sexyred wrote:grumbly wrote:U17

While running the lines in previous years, I always enjoyed being heckled by some experts 50 metres up the the pitch with shouts like:
"That's not off-side!"
"That's not off-side!"

Re: rd 4 results
Flag was only put up after the goal was scored and all the defenders turned and looked at him. Bad calls and mistakes are forgiven, this was neither.
But putting that aside, it was a cracking game (can I brag about our goalie here ) and I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of that match.

Just to add to the White city v Salisbury u17 game. Regardless of the offside call. It was a disgrace the way some people carried on about the call, some people should calm down. The advice from a few in the stands was deplorable and is not going to change the out come of the call. Also some people need to consider others around them too. But then again we are playing for sheep stations, aren't we.

Actually, I agree there Thunda and I won't defend our spectators but emotions were running high after coming back so well.
Nice to hear WC thank some of his players for playing down too.

Re: rd 4 results
Be happy the linesman was doing your defence, we had a game on Saturday where one official Lino was there so the home linesman did both halves but official kept on same side both halves so club Lino on same side both halves. 2 down at half time deservedly, then second half conceded 7, 5 were. Disputed by the defence for offside.....to no avail naturally. Then with 5 to go ref picks up an offside from 30 metres away that the Lino didn't flag for..... Completing a our doubt to the offside credibility.
Be happy he did his defence at sal vs w.c

Well said!
Even though Ive played/coached/supported the game for many years I dread having to run the line... not because I don't know the rules, its having to put up with the crap and verbals from those that don't (ie; "its not a contact sport buddy" from the Salisbury coach a few weeks ago)
