Re: AFL goes global
What I find very ironic about the ad is that it shows the game being viewed around the world and at the end it says "AUSTRALIA'S GAME". Very contradicting IMO

Re: AFL goes global
Afl slightly in front because they have some games played in tas and nt( though no teams based there).kingswood wrote:Still like to know how the afl is more national than the A League...
So I suggest they win on penalties .
Re: AFL goes global
Yet AFL will probably never play in NZ! So A League actually has a wider scope... A League also expanded (albeit briefly) to north Qld.kevinkeegan wrote:Afl slightly in front because they have some games played in tas and nt( though no teams based there).kingswood wrote:Still like to know how the afl is more national than the A League...

AFL initial expansion came from transplanting Melbourne teams to Sydney and Brisbane.. so it is really a much more parochial game. It is basically a Victorian comp, with outposts in Perth and Adelaide. Soccer, whether NSL or A League has always been a more genuine national game. NSL had Australia's first national comp in any code. Both NSL and A League have always included regional centres in a national comp, too.

it doesnt matter how AFL was expanded, the fact of the matter is that it is played all throughout Australia and is a national competition
its like saying soccer is an english game with outposts throughout the world
afl is currently bigger than the a-league

What's wrong with that, clearly football is an English game that is played all round the world.ruud wrote: its like saying soccer is an english game with outposts throughout the world
Re: AFL goes global
I think it does matter how AFL expanded.... it expanded from Melbourne; it is basically a Melbourne game.
The code of Aussie Rules expanded from Melbourne in the 19th century; AFL expanded from the VFL in the 1980's. It is still dominated by a Melbourne based hierarchy.
Sure, it is bigger than the A League in terms of club membership, TV viewing, crowds at matches, sponsorship etc etc. But it is no more "national" than the A League.

What's that got to do with ACT and NT?

Re: AFL goes global
incorrect.
(Australia has 10 territories, 3 of them being mainland and 7 of them being external).
