ps, sorry Arsenal Wrighty, digressed to THAT sport to make the point they're not squeaky clean either. And played predominantly in 3 states in this country (little Tassy doesn't count).
Yes, this is bad for soccer-football but what is the percentage of crooked games over the total played in 209 countries?

Different situation. An AFL team can tank as a club because they can't get relegated, whereas most football teams can be.

Yep. But they've got other sanctions (points deduction, draft picks, fines, suspensions). Still serious considering punters bet on alleged tankers' games.Nice One Cyril wrote:Different situation. An AFL team can tank as a club because they can't get relegated, whereas most football teams can be.

But it's a mental thing. If the players all know that they don't have to try, they won't, and it's all but impossible to prove, you just don't over-exert yourselves.Con M wrote:Yep. For those who want to see what a fixed match looks like, view highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMf4y7fIqvY
Bari 3-1 Castel Di Sangro, the final day of the 1996-97 Serie B season. Bari had to win to earn promotion. Castel had already avoided relegation.
The nature of the fix is outlined in Chapter 40 of Joe McGinniss' book The Miracle of Castel Di Sangro. There the night before the game the Castel players are talking about how it will happen. Bari are to score three, Castel a consolation. One player says Bari must score instantly. They net after 15 seconds.
Watch the video and notice how the goalkeeper, De Juliis, does not move for the third goal and only does so after the ball for the first goal passes him. The defender D'Angelo makes a meek attempt to clear the second, but completely 'mistimes' the jump. Castel's goal was to be a penalty. This happens right on half time.
Then in the second half the players can "lie down and take a nap." Their work for the day would be done.

Not as easy as that. These people are powerful.bubu wrote:Ian_Wright wrote:The worst thing is, once a player / ref is roped in to doing it once they have to continue doing or they will just get extorted!
easily fixed; DONT start being corrupt to begin with!
I wouldn't be surprised in some situations these people come back later on to the people who say no with photos of their kids going to school etc. I hear Bob Woolmer (South African who coached the West indies) He died under suspicious circumstances just before the 2007 Cricket world cup. Rumour has it he was visited by a few individuals in the early hours and apparently he said no to a few demands too many.
