But it's a mental thing. If the players all know that they don't have to try, they won't, and it's all but impossible to prove, you just don't over-exert yourselves.

Bari 3-1 Castel Di Sangro, the final day of the 1996-97 Serie B season. Bari had to win to earn promotion. Castel had already avoided relegation.

The nature of the fix is outlined in Chapter 40 of Joe McGinniss' book The Miracle of Castel Di Sangro. There the night before the game the Castel players are talking about how it will happen. Bari are to score three, Castel a consolation. One player says Bari must score instantly. They net after 15 seconds.

Watch the video and notice how the goalkeeper, De Juliis, does not move for the third goal and only does so after the ball for the first goal passes him. The defender D'Angelo makes a meek attempt to clear the second, but completely 'mistimes' the jump. Castel's goal was to be a penalty. This happens right on half time.

Then in the second half the players can "lie down and take a nap." Their work for the day would be done.

Not as easy as that. These people are powerful.
I wouldn't be surprised in some situations these people come back later on to the people who say no with photos of their kids going to school etc. I hear Bob Woolmer (South African who coached the West indies) He died under suspicious circumstances just before the 2007 Cricket world cup. Rumour has it he was visited by a few individuals in the early hours and apparently he said no to a few demands too many.
