Pepe Reina a shock target for The Sun Sport Football

Superstars Xavi and Andres Iniesta — along with skipper Carles Puyol — are said to be pushing for the 30-year-old goalkeeper to go back to the club where he started his career.The Catalan giants were stunned to hear this week that the popular Valdes, 31, will not sign a new deal when his contract expires in 18 months.

It is understood Barca will not force Valdes to see out his contract but will let him leave in the summer as he has been a great servant for eight seasons.Liverpool may let Reina go in the summer if they receive the right offer — and a shock swap with Valdes should not be ruled out.

Reina has been Spain’s No 3 keeper and their unofficial mascot in the last three tournaments they have won. A close friend of his said he was very happy at Liverpool but a return to Barca would be like “going home”.

That's the one. Reina's agent has been in town to discuss his future. The fact Liverpool have bid for another keeper could either be to ensure they have the stocks should Reina leave or they know he's going
