Sports you played:
Still currently playing football and netball, used to play touch footy, cricket (highest score 8 not out – would’ve been a century!) and volleyball. I occasionally attempt surfing and golf but it’s not pretty.
Favourite sportsmen and sportswomen:
Eric Cantona, Steve Waugh, Shane Warne, Kostya Tszyu, Socceroos, the Aussie netballers, Michael Holding, Roger Federer.. etc etc etc
No 1. sporting moment of all time:
Nov 2006 Socceroos v Uruguay World Cup qualifier without a doubt. Still get goose bumps.
Most memorable sportsman or sportswoman you interviewed:
David Beckham. And NO not because of his looks. Manchester United is my team and it truly was a surreal experience to be sitting on a boat on Sydney Harbour with one of the greats (ok with Nick McArdle as well) having a chat.. The best part was I wasn’t disappointed, he is a lovely guy – very genuine and happy to talk about anything we wanted, during and after the interview. Other than that maybe Greg Norman or Alan Shearer.
Person you would most LIKE to interview:
A tough one.. Eric Cantona (until he starts talking about sea gulls) or Sir Bobby Charlton
Dream sporting event to cover:
World Cup (Football of course!)
Funniest or most embarrassing moment:
Oh I have many of those! I’m good at the inexplicable stack on a football field or netball court.
If you could change one rule in any sport what would it be?:
If you go down in a football match you get stretchered off and have to stay off the field for at least 5-10 minutes to get rid of diving from the game.. No way would you fake it if you had to stay off the field for that amount of time
Since then, Melanie has been a key member of the FOX SPORTS NEWS presenting team and is also a key member of the FOX SPORTS football team as a host and reporter on the channel’s coverage of Socceroos matches and the Hyundai A-League.
Prior to joining FOX SPORTS, Melanie worked at Sky News as part of their sports team as a presenter and producer. Before that, the avid Manchester United supporter produced Football Stars of Tomorrow following four years in radio, where she also produced the sports programs for Radio 2 as well as football (including Euro 2004, World Cup, Socceros matches, Hyundai A-League), AFL and Basketball coverage.
She has reported from various sporting events around the country, including the Rugby World Cup in 2003, the netball, Australian Open Tennis and the cricket.
