Pre Season Training Already
It seems many juniors have started pre season a few weeks ago.
The first game is still 4 months away!!
Is this a good thing or should they be enjoying their summer sports with their mates.?
Or is it now a case of everyone starts this early as they dont want to be behind the other clubs when the season begins.

I guess its a mentality that has hindered kids development in the past, that is, they didnt always live and breathe football. I have no issue with kids wanting to play summer sports, go swimming etc instead, but then they cant complain if Johnny down the road has progressed further as he was more dedicated.mancity wrote:It seems many juniors have started pre season a few weeks ago.

Agreed, you get out what you put in. As long as this time is used constructively.Bomber wrote:I guess its a mentality that has hindered kids development in the past, that is, they didnt always live and breathe football. Re: Pre Season Training Already
Some friends and I tried to do both a lot when we were at school. Kick the ball around at the local oval, then go to the beach. Some years we played cricket too, but during the week the football came out and we used the hockey goals that were then a part of the furniture at Findon High. One particular friend went on to play NSL.paul merson wrote:Agreed, you get out what you put in. There were no i-pads, computers, mobile phones so we just got out and did it. I remember craving more football as a youth as I felt the seasons were way to short.
My advice is if you really want to become a top player, you have to make sacrifices at an early age. If you love the game, then the only sacrifices are the other things you would normally enjoy, being put on ice, so to speak. Hopefully with parents support, you'll make the most of what you can.

I agree with all the above.
Although it is difficult when your lad loves and is decent at both summer and winter sports yet gets told by his soccer club that at 12 years of age soccer training is expected to take precedence over any other sporting activity, even during the summer.
Tough call for a 12 year old, but that seems to be the way it is now.

I guess its why only a handful make the big time. All about balance in life, which I personally agree with, but knowing I was only an average player who dabbled in booze, smoking and the green in my later teens, I made "ordinary" choices to my own detriment. If I had my time again, I would have done things much more differently.mancity wrote:I agree with all the above.

End of, with your support and discussion with your boy of the pros and cons, hopefully he will make the right decision and give whatever that is his full commitment.

Re: Pre Season Training Already
After several years of observations, Winston has concluded that soccer and cricket do not mix. And it dissapoints me that kids as young as U12, U13 etc are being forced to make a decision one way or the other, when they might actually be good at both sports. Generally speaking, when pre season cricket training clashes with in season soccer games or training, the cricket folks seem to be OK with young Winston missing cricket training. They "get" that in season sport takes priority. But sadly the opposite does not seem to be the case. When pre season soccer training (or heaven forbid a pre season trial game) clashes with an in season cricket game, a very uncomfortable situation arises. With pre season soccer starting begining of Nov, the opportunity for clashes is high. Maybe this is just the way it is.......

Could be a man city thing. I wonder what Balotelli was thinking at the age of 12 or 13. !!!robinfriday10 wrote:must be a man city thing evesham??

When you're a junior you can't go to the beach with your mates because you have training
When you're a senior you cant go and get hammered with your mates because you have training/game
If you want it, you'll make the sacrifices required.
I personally think it's a very good thing that kids are training already.

Fair guess if you ask him today it would be very similar to back then..mancity wrote:Could be a man city thing. I wonder what Balotelli was thinking at the age of 12 or 13. !!!robinfriday10 wrote:must be a man city thing evesham??

To me, this appears ridiculous. There are many others intimately involved with junior fotball than i ever will be so I assume they know what they're doing and what's best for all.mancity wrote:It seems many juniors have started pre season a few weeks ago.

Overseas players have a 6 week break, and even in that time they train to keep up their levels of fitness. Players here play 7 aside, indoor, futsal during the break anyway so there is no difference with teams beginning training early.

Some teams use this period to blood in new players, finalise teams, etc.
My son plays 7aside at comets, surf life saving 3 nights a week, and pre-season 2 nights a week. Come school holidays, 7aside is over, pre season breaks (his does) and he just does surf. I bet you after 2 weeks he will be saying I can't wait for training to start and I bet many more kids say the same. Let em enjoy it.

If it done correctly then yes it is a good thing. Focus should be on technical skill acquisition and team bonding. Running should be limited to games only. A team that stays together, plays together.

that is the right point. pre season early without quality training doesnt mean anything.Stonthialo wrote:If it done correctly then yes it is a good thing. Sons U14s team has been training for about 6 weeks now but only ball work ..... thought it was only a couple of Amature League teams with out dated ideas that still did the sand hill "Snake Pit" style pre-seasons....
Re: Pre Season Training Already
have seen as many as 5 different FFSA clubs at these locations of all different ages.
Nothing wrong with taking the boys/girls to the beach for some team bonding/games and a bit of beach soccer.
Too many people care about what others do and all they need to worry about is what they are doing.

Dont think it is the location thats the point its more the running depends on age group though .. 16's and over maybe but dont see much point younger than this ..90mins wrote:have seen as many as 5 different FFSA clubs at these locations of all different ages.

Beach soccer for bonding and different environment etc is great

As long as the kids enjoy it. I know teams doing 5km runs on roads and parks as low as U13s, I bet they would rather be doing it at the beach.Sacred Noodle wrote:Dont think it is the location thats the point its more the running depends on age group though .. 16's and over maybe but dont see much point younger than this ..90mins wrote:have seen as many as 5 different FFSA clubs at these locations of all different ages.

Ball work, fitness and in some cases both, if you are happy with your sons preseason then that's great, but don't judge others. The seasons are a long way away and no one knows the future development of anyone, so let the coaches do their job, and if you don't like it, then don't sign.

Think you are missing the point 90mins ... the kids love to train and I am all for early preseason training.90mins wrote:As long as the kids enjoy it. Ball work yes ... but 5km running and full on fitness for U13 age, a lot of them 12 or 11 yrs perhaps at the moment, would have little benefit and in fact would probably detrimental -
And in response to your other inferences ... If I didnt like it I wouldnt sign ... and no dont really care about what others do at the end of the day just giving an opinion .. if other clubs junior teams want to waste their time running 5kms, or up and down sand hills instead of running around with the ball then good luck to them..

How about we just let the kids answer the question.mancity wrote:It seems many juniors have started pre season a few weeks ago.
The first game is still 4 months away!!
Is this a good thing or should they be enjoying their summer sports with their mates.?Or is it now a case of everyone starts this early as they dont want to be behind the other clubs when the season begins.

don't be ridiculous., so what if the kid wants to play football. He has to play the sport his parents tell him to.
I have always loved my cricket and my football. I still play both now, the cricket side know that as soon as the games clash, football wins. In pre season in England, I used to drive straight from football to cricket.
Oh and 5km for any footballer, let alone juniors is ridiculous. If my son was at one of these fed clubs that was training in that way then I'd be questioning why I pay such extortianate fees.
