Lady Reds face tough task against Canberra

Adelaide United faces no tougher task in a bid to return to the winner’s list when the Lady Reds meet champion Canberra United at McKellar Park on Saturday.

The Lady Reds were defeated 2-1 by Perth Glory last week after taking the lead minutes before the break, only to concede the equaliser in first-half stoppage time.

The Glory went on to score the winner in the 88th minute and Adelaide United coach Dave Edmondson admitted the hosts were deserved of all three points and even a chance for the title.

“The result a bit disappointing but our performance probably didn’t warrant a point really,” he said.

“In terms of the goals, it is disappointing to concede at anytime but particularly the first goal. It was literally seconds before half time. If we had gone in 1-0 up at half time, it could have made things very different.”

“I really think Glory will be a top four side this season and they have a chance at the title. They have recruited very well with their goalkeeper Carly Telford and the four or five of Matildas they have in their squad.”

Canberra United enjoyed an emphatic 5-0 win over Newcastle Jets last week after sharing the points in a goalless draw with Brisbane Roar in the opening round of the season.

Canberra look to be at full strength while a couple of notable absentees from the Lady Reds line-up makes the trip to the nation’s capital even tougher.

Jess Waterhouse has been selected for Australia U16 duties while hat-trick hero Sara McLaughlin is still sidelined with an ankle injury.

Marijana Racjic and Laura Johns are also not part of the travelling party.

Edmondson conceded the prospect of facing a full-strength Canberra side is an enormous task.

“Especially with the players we have missing, the trip to Canberra is probably the most difficult we will face this season,” he said.

“But, we have worked on a few different things this week specifically for Canberra and we are going there to give a good account of ourselves.”

Just a matter of being able to play out the full 90 minutes. 2 weeks in a row the girls have taken a lead and then fallen short. No doubt I'm sure they gave 110%. Signs of improvement are there, it'll take another 2 years at least before we see the girls truly fighting for a top 4 finish

It must be pretty hard to travel and play on the same day...especially the last 15-20 mins. It happened to the Wanderers in the first game and looks like it has happened to the Lady Reds the past two weeks

yeah I agree, not a good idea. Should be flying out a day before the game, at least the evening before.

Reading the match info the first and only sub was at 81 Min. , two unused sub's.
Their first goal came at 72 Min's.
Why not get some fresh legs on after 60 Min

Do I tow the party line and say well done girls. Great effort. 1-0 up for ,most of the game and then lose 3-1. With goals in the last 15 minutes?

Or do I say…lack of solid 90 minute competitive effort. A free kick is our only goal.

I think by the time the team becomes a cohesive unit, the season will be over and we’ll have to wait til next year for an other crack at national league.

Until the players ALL develop a hard competitive edge and understand that their spots are on a knife’s edge, and the players become a cohesive unit by being kept together all year AND play in the local Prems league (as the Lady Reds) we’ll end up with the same old same old.

Again the FFSA (like the SANFL) needs to declare its hand and state “We’re here for the betterment of local women’s football” or “We are here to support the local league so that we can provide players with the opportunity to play ion the National competition and possibly make the women’s national team’s”. The FFSA (as with the SANFL) cannot be a parent for two diametrically opposed competitions.

I dont agree with all you say on here Sad Gal but this is Spot on !

The Premier League could play a season with the Red's within it but not on the table ,
the results ( goals for and against ) would not need to be counted in the season , but at the end of the season the Lady Reds would be cohesive. This might give the quality players in S.A. a slight advantage against the Interstaters as well ( which is what this team is ment to be all about ).

It would give DE 21 weeks to settle the best side we can put up then add 3 ( N.Z.) internationals .

Thanks Bagmnan. Not always going to get agreement. I think the competition, the players and SA deserves to have the best set up to deliver the best team. The players' commitment is unquestioned. The FFSA needs to act quickly and establish the Lady Reds as our Premier team. Something for our local players to aspire to.

This will do unmeasurable benefit to the local comp and soccer scene. Boy it needs a positive story. The Reds will be the flagship of the comp. As it stands players under 17 always aspire to make the State Team. It’s a great honour to make those squads. After that there is nothing. Those whom by 17 have been selected to try out for the Matildas do so. Those who have not are condemned to a slow death in the under performing Prems comp.

This is the part I agree with- (happy to finally find common ground!)- I think there is a great conflict between the two streams and it's difficult if not impossible for one organization to do both because the aims are in conflict so much of the time.

I do think that things are headed in the direction that SG suggests, namely that the Lady Reds are beoming something that the young girls are aspiring to- the bar is being raised in terms of expectations of the girls in training, on and off the pitch and those elevated expectations are filtering down to the state programs as well- the overall buzz surrounding the team is much better than in recent years. So I think it's on the right track.

I'm not sure about the Lady Reds playing in the Prems- there are some obvious difficulties with that scenario. But good points SG. I really liked the constructive tone of the post.

Thanks “Junior”.

Standing back here this reminds me of the SANFL and our two AFL teams whereby they are trying to keep the integrity of the SANFL intact (as it should) however, its having difficulties in managing the roles and purpose of the AFL teams here in Adelaide. They don’t want them to have a side in the SANFL. Why not? The AFL is the top echelon of Footy. And we need two reserves teams in the SANFL so that the players from each team can play together ands be ij the best place to make the call up to the AFL sides. The SANFL resists because “they have an obligation to the local teams…” Sad but being the 2nd best comp in Oz means F All.

The Lady Reds are our peak State team. And we need to keep it strong and give it the framework in which success is inevitable. By having players have much a long lay off before the local season kicks off AND then to play in different teams for the local season then get thrown together just before the season starts (exaggerated a tad) you cannot expect to get the level of competition you want. Then BANG season’s over.

The lack of learning and foresight by the FFSA bothers me. We need to get this sorted out before we once again sit in the same place we have been the last 3 seasons.
