: At the recent Pirate awards day it was noted that not one coach was unable to find an extra award for their son. EG "Best and Fairest" "Best Team Man" or "Most Improved".
Is this the "norm" at other clubs? Or just the inevitable product of the parent coach model?

It's called - 'parent wont help but will criticize syndrome'. It is very prevalent in SA, and affects 90% of all soccer parents. There seems to be no cure at the moment.

Would be interesting to see just how many coach/sons are at the pirates.
My son plays at Pirates, and the son of his coach did win an award. It was for 'best team player', and it was selected by the players. I have no problem with that.
Why bother with these (best and fairest) player awards. Cant remember ever seeing anyone in Braitain getting an award for being 'fair'. May be wrong but can't recall junior clubs giving out a player of the year award either.
Seems all it causes is hassle and by the remarks above division, most teams give all players a participation award at end of season where everybody gets the same, why not just leave it at that. Cant see anyone playing 'left back' all year having much of a shout for these awards in front of the 30 goal striker or flashy 'number 10'.

Actually thats not true - my son played left back all year and also the year before and was awarded the "coaches award" two years running and also picked up the runner up "best and fairest" this year. He worked hard at training and always gave 100% in every game and he got rewarded for it. Also the single game he played for the U19 team (also in the left back position) he got awarded 3 points for best on ground.
left back from our side won b&f and players player award ahead of a 41 goal striker.. it does happen both ways and typically is the striker I do see your point
