Adelaide United Lady Reds (official)
Internal squad game tomorrow 3.15pm at Burton. I know it clashes with AFL but our training schedule is more important. A game on Sunday would disrupt training for next week. Periodisation, rest and recovery take priority at this time in our preparation, hope you all understand.

Why I prefer games against opposition rather then internals - the players who know are already in the squad will have nothing to prove, even if they play poorly they will be selected, only those players who are trying to prove themselves to the coach who are going to give 100% Playing against opposition motivates the whole squad to give 100%, isnt that a better way to approach the start of the season ?
Re: Lady Reds
so still no response on how it went? lets hope during the season no games get postponed due to weather etc cause that will effect what they have in place.....what a joke !!!!

If it means so much to you then perhaps you should have been there.
I don't just want to have my cake and eat it, I want to go back for cheesy biscuits and tiramisu.

I'm keen to hear any objective opinions about the game as I live in the country and couldn't get there!
Re: Lady Reds
It was an internal trial game, and it looked like an internal trial game.
Standard was generally good, but as with many 'trial' games you saw a mixture of approaches and attributes from the players.
Some 'hogging' the ball and either not playing others in or doing so too late, others trying to play their positions and maintain team structure.
A few nervous mistakes by many, but some great displays of skill too.
What will it all mean (especially as it is only a very small part of the overall trials process)? Only the coach knows and we will have to wait and see.

Re: Lady Reds
why is there no information coming out of FFSA regarding the preseason and trialing of the lady reds squad
How can they expect to generate interest and support by operating a closed shop

Trial game at Burton on Saturday against under 14 ntc boys at 1 o'clock.
FFSA Cant release the squad really until the players themselves know whose in.
To me it looks to be a really good year this year but if you ask sad girl I may have rose coloured glasses on so come on down and check out for yourselves.....

how did the team go today and has the squad been selected and if so can someone post the names...

I think that it would be a fair assumption to say that the amount of interest in the Lady Reds would be in direct proportion to the amount of information that the FFSA releases about them.John Cena wrote:how did the team go today and has the squad been selected and if so can someone post the names...

Re: Lady Reds
Decent game finished 4-2 though the girls outplayed them for 60 minutes. Was 2-0 with 2 classy finishes and an outstanding keeping display from the keeper that played the first half. Possible lack of fitness resulted in the 4-2 loss but the girls are to be commended.

Dave Edmondson's Blog - Lady Reds update
With the increase of modern technology and in particular the Internet, the number of 'experts' and critics has grown significantly in the sporting arena.
The Lady Reds are certainly not immune to these experts and critics, with forum posts and Facebook comments criticising their preparation, lambasting squad selections and hammering individual player performances.
Of course everyone is welcome to their own opinion and this is no different to pre-forum days, the only difference being that when someone posts something on a forum and it appears in print, other people somehow seem to believe it and presume it must be true!
So what is the truth about the 2012/13 Lady Reds?
Is it the same old story, are they under prepared, are they thrown together at the last minute, are they disowned and unwanted, as many 'experts' would have you believe?
Well I'm afraid to say, for all the glass half empty brigade, the pessimists and the defeatists out there - NO!
A preliminary squad of 18 players has been selected with two remaining spots to be decided on in the week ahead.
The Lady Reds have been working closely with Adelaide United this season and the squad is set to be announced and introduced at half time of the Reds match against Western Sydney Wanderers at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night.
The Lady Reds have also enjoyed an outstanding response to its inaugural membership package and can boast close to 50 members for the 2012/13 season.
The first match of the season is on Saturday, October 20 at Burton Park against new club WSW. The match kicks-off at 2pm.
In terms of preparation and the lead up to this W-League season, throughout 2012 a group of players were selected to play as the NTC squad in the boys U15 A division.
This group of players included a number of 2011/12 W League players, such as; Ruth Wallace, Racheal Quigley, Emma Checker, Grace Henry and Ebony Philcox and some potential future W-League players like Jess Waterhouse, Laura Johns, Monique Ianella, Issy Hodgson and Ellie Bills.
A number of 'senior' players we also invited in to train with the squad as the year went on and the new W-League season approached.
Throughout the winter season I watched every possible game of Women’s football, ranging from U13, U15's and U17's to Division 1, Reserves and of course the Premier League, in an attempt to unearth any previously missed talent – and believe me we do have some talented players in SA!
Players I spotted and players nominated by clubs were then invited to trial for the Lady Reds alongside those NTC and previous W-League players.
In total over 50 players attended the trials, from which a training squad of 30 was selected. This squad of 30 very committed and dedicated players have then undertaken a comprehensive 'pre-season training program consisting of five team sessions per week plus extra individual strength and conditioning sessions.
Many of these young women are training 8-10 times per week now, on top of their school, university and work commitments.
Last week, a squad of 18 players was provisionally named, with a small number of 'train on' players named as well.
These train on plays will continue to work with the squad and be available as injury replacements or straight replacements should the squad need it.
The final two squad places will be decided upon prior to the season opener and the players in contention for those spots are aware of the situation and are working very hard to secure those last two spots.
As the season approaches, preparation continues, with five team sessions per week on the grass as well as some team building and bonding exercises off the pitch.
Three warm up games have been arranged in the past month with one internal game during the STIC tournament and another on the weekend against the FFSA Boys Development squad.
There will be a third pre-season hit-out on Thursday night again against the FFSA Boys, which should give the team a real test.
I am sure this kind of preparation and commitment from the players will come as a surprise to many of the forum posters and pessimists and to be honest it only really scratches the surface!
It doesn't mention the recovery protocols the players go through, the ice baths, the stretching, the recovery sessions following games or the extra fitness sessions organised by our captain which are attended by a growing number of players each week.
It doesn’t account for the financial sacrifices made by players who have to turn down shifts at work to attend trainings or matches, or consider the international players who are continuing their university studies, including sitting exams, whilst overseas.
It also doesn't consider the VOLUNTEERS who are working behind the scenes to secure sponsorships and memberships for the team!
Could the preparation be better, of course it could. The Women’s Premier League could finish a little sooner to give the W-League squad longer together before the season, the gap between the Women’s Premier League and the W-League could be closer and this is an area that both the FFA and FFSA are addressing.
I am sure Alex Ferguson and Brendan Rodgers would rather their players weren't called off to national duty mid season or spent their off season playing in World Cups or African Nations Cups etc.
But, you have to accept interruptions and simply do everything you can to control the controllables and provide the players and team the best possible preparation, which is what we have done.
SO finally for the glass half full people out there, the Lady Reds are fitter and more organised than last season.
We have a more balanced and competitive squad. I am immensely proud of this bunch of young women and I back them 100% as I know a number of you out there do as well.
I am sure the hard work put in by everyone since our last game last season will pay off this season and you will see a new Adelaide United Lady Reds.
Jump on the positive band wagon and support your team, THE LADY REDS!

Re: Lady Reds
Thankyou Dave for putting your point of view across.
No I’m not an expert or a doomsday advocate or half glass empty person. I’m someone who has lived and breathed the local Womens soccer scene fro many years. And whilst I was involved (in many capacities) I too wanted to believe that all was going well and was struggling to have a glass half full (especially after 6 solid years of hands on involvement) perspective when I saw that from the hierarchy point of view….”close enough was good enough” and that we should sit back and accept what ha been dished out all the while many excellent hard working and dedicated players were denied opporuntiy at State / National League and Matilda representation because we in SA were not up to the Eastern state standards.
I’m frustrated that unlike any other competition, the Lady Reds can EXPECT to select a team and have it prepared within days of a national competition. Yes you can do the extra fitness sessions. Ice baths. Group therapy and other staff however, it comes down to one thing. Can this team play as a TEAM. Or will it start to gel when the season ends? This all means nothing if the foundations are compromised.
You say that you will work with the Adelaide United group. That’s ok. But just realise THAT UNLIKE THE lady Reds, this team gets together months before it kicks a ball in anger. And unlike the Lady Reds it has a purpose.
So from my point of view (and many of those whom are afraid to acknowledge or ask) what is the Lady Reds purpose? SASI had its purpose handed down from the National Training program (AIS) (albeit it failed miserably under its former leadership group.).
I appreciate your defence of the system however, I do suspect (or hope) that you would rather the situation were different. Unfortunately you have the situation like Port and Crows have where the SANFL is the master of teams in two different competitions ie the SANFL hierarchy wishes to preserve the local league whilst trying to ensure our two teams are successful at the national league. You can’t have one master with feet in both camps. Doesn’t work.
Yes you have 50 members….excellent. The challenge is to entice non-traditional followers to the game. Like me having an interest in the National Netball league. Never followed it but boy o boy its an exciting game.

Re: Lady Reds
I kinda agree with Sad Gal - great all that stuff they've been doing, all I want to know is where does he think they will finish ? top 4 ? This will show some strength in his conviction and that all that stuff they have done so far has been worthwhile, so few trial games is what concerns me.
However having read up about other W League clubs, most of them havent been training for long either.
Reading his indepth report, looks like it couldve been broken down into fortnightly reports and kept those of us who are interested updated with the progress - however as Head Coach that is your perogative. ( maybe needs a media person ? )
All I ask, is to see the team do well, be 100% competitive, play some good football - if they can do that I will make the water bag trip to the home games.
Good Luck to all involved

Re: Lady Reds
Let's just hope this year is finally going to be better. They are running out of excuses...all ppl want is SA not to be a laughing stock. I don't really know anyone hoping they have a bad run, but ppl see what they see and react as they react. Everyone seems frustrated and FFSA/DE/Lady Reds don't really do a good job to relief that frustration. If they start winning some games instead of making up excuses things may change.

Has Dave looked at the last few seasons results before blogging that post, I think before he posted those comments he shouldve let his results do the talking....I think he reads footballnews...
