The Matildas

Post by SAD GAL »

No SA Players.

The current squad in Gerrmany for the WC includes a players who was until recently playing cricket....Soccer is not her first sport.

Still there was no room for one of our players from the SA centre of scoocer excellence ie SASI.

I'll presume you are talking about ellyse perry? Shea been playing soccer and cricket side by side for years! We toured together for aus school girls in 06. Also quite confident she has been involved in all three w-league seasons, it's not as if she had appeared out of know where and switched sports. For the record.

Thanks for the prompt reply Leps.

Point here is that this girl has come from relative obscurity. Not a part of the traditional “elite pathways” program. Like our sasi players are/were.

Question is/was, why is there no room for our players in the Matildas team? And does our elite program at sasi need to provide the women’s soccer players who strive to achieve national selection with an apology for their lack of success.

I THINK SO.

"This girl" has been a Mathilda for a couple of years now, if I'm not mistaken. Don't think she has come from obscurity- can't say what pathway she followed, maybe she did come up through the elite pathway in her state- we at least know (thanks Lepps) she was on the national school girls side in 2006- seems she's been around awhile and just happens to be super talented in two sports.

It is ridiculous that there are no SA girls in the national side, but using Ellyse Perry as an example of some obscure player who's come out of nowhere is a poor choice.

is it any different to other sports?
little or no SA person involved at a national level.

in the case of soccer, I suspect they look at SA results vs the rest.

Pretty sure she was either in nswis or the capital football program! I also think that maybe she was the youngest debutant for the matildas at one point 2!
Lovely girl!

Points taken however, how then does the NSWIS or Capital programs differ to ours? Answer: It shouldn't. We're all part of the National Training Prgram that SASI are/were/should've implemented and managed.

By the way has anyone been watching "An Idiot Abroad on SBS"? Who does Karl look and sound like ? I'll give you two guesses.

About 4 times the population to draw upon? As well as being geographically located next to the AIS and where Tom Sermanni and the other national coaches are based. With a larger talent pool and more exposure to the people doing the selecting is surely an advantage for these programs.

Not saying things aren't broken, but comparing ourselves to interstate programs is futile.

I'd be disappointed if they included a South Australian just to make up the numbers and state that we were represented as a state. Would hope they best players were sellected to represent the national team at all levels.

Poor reasons for our lack of representation.

All comes down to two things:

1) Poor local women's competition. The women's comp is inadequate to develop and prepare players for the rigors and demnads of the game at the top level.

2) SASI (R.I.P) lot to answer for.
